Wow

Confidence. This could never b a first novel. I can imagine the editors look after the first hour!! Interesting but????! And then it gets hoooooof! Mick zHerron has become my favorite author. Every book is stand alone great. And Julia Franklin read the HELL out of this. She gets Mick and ID brilliant. One of those few narrators you go looking to see what else have they done’?? Mick needs aHulu platform for his work. This book would make a brilliant movie. Anyway.... start listening!

I love the narration.

The narrator of this book, Julia Franklin, is one of the very best. The voices and intonations that she gives to the different characters make the book come to life. I highly recommend this book and the other Mick Herron’s (Zoe Boehm series) that she has narrated.

worst reader ever

I tried to get past it because I am a huge Herron fan and love the audio editions of the Slough House series, but this reader is incredibly overbearing. Way way too much emphasis on every. single. word. The scenery chewing overacting is such that I couldn't follow the plot—far too distracted by the overdone voicing. (Not good in so many ways, including: why does she use a thick, Boris-and-Natasha Russian accent to voice a hispanic character????) I got maybe halfway through, kept having to rewind whole chapters to try to hear the story rather than the hamfest vocal performance, and finally just couldn't take it any more, gave up and returned for refund credit.

Excellent Story and narration

The story was well developed and engaging. I particularly appreciated Ms. Franklin’s introduction and Explanation about how she would narrate this book.

Earlyish Mick Herron

You can feel Mick Herron getting into his stride here, but once you read/listen to the Jackson Lamb series you realise he's capable of much more than he's achieved here.
I'm afraid that I didn't enjoy Julia Franklin's narration. Sorry, Julia. Quite mannered and not always convincing when she does voices.

Nice but not Slough House

Enjoyed the book, good story, well written. Narration, in any other world would have been very good, however, it is hard not to yearn for Sean Barrett but that is just my guilty pleasure....was very well read

Too abstract, story line bounced about

I love Mick Herron's Slough House series but this is terrible. Story line bounced back and forward, very abstract and just not for. Listened to about 3hrs and just couldn't bear it any longer. Returned for credit.

More excellence from Mick

I'm as devoted to the Jackson Lamb/Slough House series every bit as much as the next Mick Herron fan, so I expected Reconstruction to fall a bit flat by comparison. It didn't. I thought it was a superb novel with vivid characters and a tense, tight plot. Having almost all the events take place on a single day seems to me a difficult device, one which Mick Herron pulled off skillfully and with all the dark humour and twists that we hope for in his work. Absolutely loved it.

Surprise ending

Another great story by Mick Herron - this time about Bad Sam Chapman. A surprise ending that is worth waiting for.

Disappointing for fans of Herron’s Slough House series

I’m an avid fan of the excellent Slough House series and while waiting for the next volume to be released thought I’d try these other titles. This book was a disappointment. It’s very slow, particularly at the beginning - it’s repetitive and the narrator is nothing like the excellent standard of the series. The story isn’t that strong, the characters don’t have the same interest, and overall it’s a much poorer quality. If this was my first book from this author I wouldn’t have gone on to read the series - which would have been a great loss. Skip this - stick with the Slough House/Slow Horses series.

Not in the same league as the Slow Horses series

Very disappointed sadly by this book - at first I thought I was just missing the usual narrator but this was sluggish and though it had moments where it looked like it was taking off it never really did. Not sure if it might have been better to read than listen to but the writing didn’t come across as strong as his usual work.
