Publisher's Summary

I died for Hostess cupcakes.

I know. Tragic, right? Even worse, after I came back, I still didn't get any cupcakes.

What I did get, however, is a six-foot-something reaper with eyes like blue fire to guide me into the world of the supernatural. Which, as it turned out, wasn't quite like the fairy tales little girls are told growing up.

Not only is magic real, more importantly, so are monsters. And apparently, I'm one of them.

But I'm getting ahead of myself here. You see, four years ago, I left my hometown and swore to never come back.

Now, my brother is dead, and I have no choice but to go searching for answers. Except finding them isn't easy when the secret society he belonged to is covering it up. I have to find out who killed him while watching my own back, because if I'm not careful, I might be next - and this time, there's no do-over. Luckily for me, Mr. Single and Hot as F--k is determined to help me keep my ass alive.

I'm a lucky, lucky girl. Some days.

Contains mature themes.

Good but...

First of all the characters themselves are fairly well done and have some depth to them, the story plot however is so severely lacking that it leaves a lot to vw desired. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the book and it seriously made me laugh but I feel like there was more that could have been expanded on and more explanation given towards the plot and building the world than what was actually given and then to just end a crappy a$$ cliff hanger like that feels like such a cop out with is the reason the story got a 2 star from me.

Not the full story

Yet another book which doesn’t feel like the whole story - a big pet peeve of mine. However, the second book does conclude (with room for another instalment) so if you don’t mind one for the price of two with your novels, it’s a fun read. Narration is decent, story is intriguing- though this book has a weird forced climax that doesn’t really feel earned or dramatic enough, it also ends on a cliff hanger.

2.5 stars

I liked the idea & were some good parts but just felt it didn't have enough meat in it to really grab me. I just wish got more emotion from Salem that wasn't snark or need for cupcakes. She returns home after her twin brothers death. She didn't attend the funeral & only had one small moment where she showed any emotion regarding his death & she dies & comes back as a reaper & suddenly in this supernatural world & shes all 'ah well shrug move on'. Because of this never really got a feel for her other than all she wants is cupcakes. The character of Grim lived up to his name & not much likeable about him. Her best friend of Tasmin seemed to be the only friendly one in this book.... . will not be continuing with this series.

Holly Jackson is ok, but her voice is so distinct all books she narrates sound the same no matter who has written them, that I actually thought I was listening to another book from a different author a few times.
