More trouble in our little cove

I love a good who-done-it mystery, especially one with a twist. And trust Ellle Keaton to give me one.

Good story. Good narration.

If you have read most of Elle Keaton's earlier related series ( Shielded Hearts and Veiled Intentions), it isn't hard to see where the story is going. That doesn't mean the story didn't have some interesting twists though. I appreciate the pieces of reality that Keaton brings to light, especially in this book. The problems are all to real.

This was a great addition to the series, and I am anticipating the next one. I won't object to another glimpse into what Adam Klay is up to either....

Amazing!

4.5 Stars

Real Danger is the second book in the West Coast Forensics series, while you could benefit from having read the previous book in the series and the Hamarsson and Dempsey series, it can be read as a standalone.

I absolutely loved Ryder. I felt so bad for him and everything he's gone through since losing his mother, but I was also impressed by how resilient he was, and how strong and patient, as well. I liked Shay, I've been intrigued by him ever since we met him in the previous books. However, I was fed up by how he kept bringing up the age gap between Ryder and him over and over and using it as an excuse to keep Ryder at arm's length. Don't get me wrong, I really liked them together, but because of Shay it took forever and a day to actually see their relationship come to fruition.

The case was fantastic and unpredictable. The twists and turns were nothing short of brilliant, and out of all the ones we've seen throughout, it was the one that I was more impressed with. I can't recommend this book and this series and the one it spin-offs enough.

Michael Dean did a great job with the narration, he brought not only the characters, but the story to life for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end.

Great listen!

Story: I was really intrigued with Shay while reading the previous books and I am so happy he got his own book! He and Ryder were both great and I absolutely loved their chemistry. Elle Keaton created complex and relatable characters.
The story itself was really enjoyable and it's a great addition to the series!
Narration: Spot on performance by Michael Dean as usual.

Goodness in mankind

I have not read previous books in the series but I’m able to follow up and enjoy this story so I think this work well as a standalone.

It’s seriously frustrating when a man you are seriously crushing for and head over heels in love with is 20 years older than you. It’s even more devastating when the older man seems to be immune to his foxy charms and keep refusing his advances left and right. Flirty and witty Ryder Mann has finally for his Achilles’ heel Shay Delacombe who is rigid and stubborn. It’s not that Shay doesn’t share the same feelings for Ryder but he has reasons to refuse the romantic attentions of this young man. A budding romance that’s undeniable to blossom, these two men have to overcome a lot and the ugliness of mankind to achieve their HEA.

This is really an interesting novel that shows us some of the uglier sides of the human kind. The abduction of young, ingenious women from the area chilled me to the bones. I loved the perfect blend of action, mystery and thrill as well as steamy romance. The highlight of this novel is definitely the Q&A texts between Ryder and Shay. Loved it!

Real Danger

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Review Copy of this book.

*I have read/listened to some other books by this author so I had some background (primarily from the Veiled Intentions series), but I have not read all of the previous stories. While I highly recommend at the very least the three main books in the Veiled Intentions series (since that introduces both Shay and Ryder), I think it read okay without some of the others.

I liked the little chats between Shay and Ryder at the beginning of each chapter, it was a fun way to get some bonding between them in without bogging down the story. But I will say for the first few chapters I was rather confused by the way it comes across in the audio. I happened to read a review that mentioned them and it made so much more sense.

I could understand Shay's concern over the age-gap with Ryder, 15 years can seem like a lot. But I think Ryder is a mature enough character that the age-gap isn't really an issue once they start figuring things out. Ryder's determination to get past Shay's wall could have come across as too pushy, but it was actually rather adorable in the story. I thought the mystery was good, plenty of twists and turns to keep it from being completely predictable and enough action to keep the story moving. I liked getting to see some secondary characters that I've gotten to know in other books as well.

Excellent audiobook

Perfect mix of mystery and romance - and I loved them both!

The main characters are engaging and I enjoyed sharing their journey as they spent time together following the clues.

The narrator was excellent. He really inhabited the characters and ‘lived’ the story. I wish all narrators were this smooth and confident.

Exciting and intriguing mystery and romance

I really enjoyed this audiobook! Shay and Ryder seem so different on the surface, but they are really a perfect match. The mystery was also compelling and suspenseful with a couple red herrings and plenty of twists and surprises. There is plenty of humor, too. Clarabelle remains one of my favorite characters. I loved Ryder's tweet questioning (originally an effort to get to know more about Shay) that added a lot of funny moments and comments, and I loved the way Ryder went after what he wanted, even in the face of resistance. Great story.

The narration is fantastic, with distinct voices for the characters and great delivery, especially of the humorous/snarky parts.

I received a free copy of the audiobook at my request and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Great blend of mystery and romance

Came for the mystery but stayed for the wonderful characters and blend of mystery and romance. I've been reading some true crime/PI books lately and the blurb for this one sounded like a nice fictional addition to the list. It was wonderful! The mystery kept me guessing and on edge and Shay and Ryder were a delightful couple. This is a great take on the grumpy/sunshine and age gap tropes and watching Ryder slowly but surely chip away at Shay's resistance was funny, sweet and hot. Michael Dean caught the humor, heat and suspense of the story perfectly.

When Ryder gets his way

I enjoyed watching Ryder and Shay dance around each other in the first West Coast Forensics book. Of course I knew these two would wind up together. And rightly so. There’s the fifteen-year age gap. Ryder thinks nothing of this, but Shay’s obsessed with it. Shay has also been a defense attorney for the past however many years until retuning to the island to watch out for his great great aunt (who is a hoot), and to reassess his life choices. He’s too young to retire, but he’s also tired of defending those who are guilty.

When he and Shay are approached by someone to help find out what happened to a missing young woman, they just sort of go along with it. Ryder has more investigative skills, but Shay knows how to read people and how to ask the right questions. Things heat up and it becomes clear someone doesn’t want them solving the mystery of the disappearance.

I liked how the author wove in the Highway of Tears up here in Canada. Native women (and other women) have gone missing along this highway for years without any explanation. In both the States and Canada, disappearances and murders of Indigenous woman are far less likely to be investigated and solved. This is a gaping wound that needs to be addressed. This book helps in that forward momentum, bringing the issue to the fore.

Shay and Ryder are in more danger than they think and their lives are on the line. I don’t want to give away too much, but I enjoyed the suspense in this book. Ms. Keaton always does a good job with that. I got my happy ending and I’m thrilled there’s another book to come.

I’ll say Michael Dean gave another stellar performance and I highly recommend both the book and the series.

The attorney and the computer genius…

Ryder has been crushing on Shay for a while. Shay thinks Ryder is too young for him. A missing girl case brings them together. They close proximity breaks down Shays walls and he gives in. The investigation turns dangerous and one of them could be lost to the bad guys. Great romance, slow burn, suspense and action complete this awesome listen… and the narrator too did a great job with that beautiful voice.

So good!

I am a huge fan of both Elle Keaton and Michael Dean. This series is one of my favorites and the story of Ryder and Shay got me since the beginning. The plot is captivating and the author kept me at the edge of my seat the whole time Ryder and Shay worked together in the mystery and found each other in the process. Mr Dean showed us his great talent in this narration, ensuring that every single character was brought alive. It was a treat hearing his amazing performance, smooth voice and wonderful voice acting, A great narration of an outstanding story. Loved it! So good!

Fun age gap

I feel this is really a fun age gap story. The back and forth between them and their texting made me laugh. The questioning of favorites was entertaining. There is a part that is mostly to do with the disappearance of a girl believed to be kidnapped. That also has a twist that changes the stereotype guy savior. I really like the characters. Ryder is very special and determined. Shay running from any relationship with Ryder is cute. The resolution to all the issues held my attention till the end. Michael Dean’s narration made these characters come to life. He fit so well with these characters.

Real Danger

A good listen. Michael Dean does a great job with the narration. This series is, I believe, connected to another series; while I didn't feel like I was missing something in the first book, I did some with this one. That said, I was still able to enjoy the story and the couple's journey.

Love Piedras, loved this age-gap romance!

West Coast Forensics investigator Ryder Mann doesn’t mind working on Piedras Island because it gives him an excuse to spend time with lawyer Shay Delacombe. Unfortunately for Ryder, Shay sees their 20-yr age gap as a BIG deal but Ryder is sure he can wear him down. He gets his chance when the two work together to track down a missing woman and find themselves in real danger. I was so looking forward to Shay’s story and I was absolutely delighted with it. There is a lovely contrast between Ryder as the eager puppy and Shay as the old dog who is reluctant to learn any new tricks. The investigation and the relationship both started as slow burns but each built up a satisfying head of steam by the end. I love audio narrator Michael Dean, he really channels emotions and action well, and when he uses his DEEP voice … perfection!
