Publisher's Summary

You're never too old to make a bad decision.

After 20 winters on the road, Tanyth Fairport makes one last pilgrimage in her quest to learn all she can about the herbs and medicinal plants of Korlay before settling down to write her magnum opus. Her journey is interrupted when she decides to help a small village and learns that much of what she knows of the world may not be quite as it seems.

Nathan Lowell blends Wiccan tradition and shamanistic lore into a fantasy quest for a new - if unlikely - heroine. She learns that the familiar sometimes hides the fantastic and that, even when you think you’ve made your decisions, life doesn’t always agree.

Not all adventurers are young men.

I love Nathan's work, and the Tanyth Fairport Adventures are particular favorites. Tanyth is an itinerant herb lorist of a certain age who is travelling on foot to the home of another lorist who knows more than she does. She encounters a small settlement on the Road. Adventures ensue.

The story is excellent, the performance flawless. Many thanks, Nathan Lowell and Veronica Gigere.

World building and perspective

I enjoy Mr. Lowell’s world building. This story has a fascinating explanation of magic and the origins of the crone in the woods trope. I enjoyed this story years ago as a podcast and I’m happy to hear it with some more polish to the audio.

It’s different having the protagonist be a woman of late middle age and have her strengths & weaknesses addressed in a dignified way. She rescues herself and shields others realistically.

The narrator gives this story a soothing voice and I liked the addition of the chimes to differentiate the dreams & visions.

there is a issue with chapter 10

I loved the book and the entire series but chapter 10 is out of sequence so the chapters go 9, 11, 10 it's my only complaint about the book.

Pretty good

Not your rip, roaring adventure, but just quiet storytelling. Good characters with real problems. A touch of magic or something is added, but it fits with the story.

Nathan Lowell is a bad writer

This may be a minority opinion, but Lowell is not a good writer. Hackneyed plot, dull language, indistinguishable characters. Lazy, minimal world making. Everyone shrugs about every other line, and he’s insufferably redundant. People don’t just nod, they nod “in agreement.” Well duh. Their every tiny action is detailed. Leave something to your reader’s imagination, man, and go get yourself some new verbs - I swear he used the same handful of maybe 20 without variation throughout the whole book. I have no idea why his work is popular. I won’t be reading another of his books. Also the narrator on this one reads in a mannered way that set my teeth on edge, making it that much harder to bear.

Old world charm

A whimsical tale of a band of misfits, making a new life for themselves in a new village they have built, away from their families in town.
Tanith is a wandering nomad learning a hedgewitch trade. She has been wandering the roads for 20 years, staying the winters with other hedge witches, sharing and learning.
She spends time with the new villagers, teaching them skills of healing that they need, and sharing their trials and tribulations.
