Publisher's summary

In the sixth title featuring Donna Leon's ever-charming and sympathetic protagonist, Commissario Guido Brunetti comes to the aid of a young nursing sister who has had five patients unexpectedly die and decides to leave her convent.

In the course of his inquiries, Brunetti encounters an unusual cast of characters but discovers nothing that seems criminal. Is the nun simply creating a smoke screen to justify abandoning her vocation? Or has she stumbled onto something very real and very sinister - something that places her own life in imminent danger?

A beautiful, suspense-filled novel, Quietly in Their Sleep is Donna Leon at the top of her form.

Again a deeply personal crime solved

This was another amazingly personal and considered crime tale set in Venice that was visceral and present. I am blessed to be able to experience life in Venice with Guido and his cohorts this one had the added benefit of broaching the Catholic and lay divide. Opus Dei even! Love love love

Quietly in Their Sleep

I binged this one, at first I planned on trying to pace myself and the next thing I know its over! I'm happy and sad. I'm happy because of course it means I liked the book a lot but sad at the same time since it's over so quickly. I'm glad there are more.

Secrets

coercion, discord, church-politics, law-enforcement, family, friendship, attempted-murder, murder-investigation, Venice, murder****

Very convoluted and begins with a premise of murder without any supporting evidence, all presented by a young woman who is only very recently no longer a nun. Brunetti starts to become involved on principle but finds many oddities. Then someone appears to try to kill the young woman and it's an even worse entanglement from then on. An odd plot (I only worked for nuns and I am not a catholic) but compelling.
I do enjoy listening to narrator David Colacci, especially his Italian (or is it Venetian) pronunciations.

Layered in storyline

Love the Guido books, love all the descriptive Venice architecture culture and history woven into the mystery. My first one on audio and loved the narrator and his language intonation. Just made it more fascinating. Great series by D. Leon

What’s worse - religion or Italian corruption?

Slapped the Catholic church re sexual abuses by priests. An obvious geographical setting in Italy - with a heavily anti religious emphasis.

Who Chooses the Narrator?

Donna Leon deserves David Colacci. I wish all talented authors were as fortunate. I wonder if Leon chose her narrator or if some other brilliant person did that.

Decent book but not my favorite

I felt the story was lacking in this book. It wasn’t even clear if there was a crime for most of the story. I enjoy the books but this one was kind of boring.

The narrator makes this book!

I have listened to all of Donna Leon’s books available on audio. I enjoy her Brunetti character very much, and her plots. But what makes them come alive is David Colacci’s reading. His beautiful Italian accented English is never overdone, and different for each character.
