Publisher's summary

When Peter finds himself on a strange planet, drafted into a war by alien abductors, his only goal is to be one of the few to survive the war and return home to Earth.

Peter is one of thousands who get abducted every year, as payment to the aliens. The aliens have given humans portal travel, healing serums, and other advanced alien technology. The quality of life has improved, but everything has a price.

Along with a group of strangers, Peter is trained for war by going up against literal monsters. The troll-like aliens won't give them modern weapons. Humans have to battle monsters with swords and shields, and that is just to get out of boot camp.

His only chance to survive is to use the alien device he is given. The device can increase his strength and speed to superhuman levels. It can even grant him powers that seem like magic. Complicating things is that the device's interface is written in an ever-changing alien language. He will have to figure out its secrets if he wants to keep himself and his team alive.

solid start

I enjoyed this story. a unique way to get into a gamelit genre but also can just be a scifi book. solid story. characters are written well and the pacing is fast enough to keep you entertained and never bored. ending seems rushed but I can't wait till book 2

Gamers will love it

it's an entertaining book with a good story that keeps you wanting more. I had read the hard copy of the book and enjoyed it.
I used audible to listen to it and was not impressed by the performance of the narrator and I felt it took away from emotions that the book had in mind.

Decent book with some flaws

I liked most parts of this book but some dialogue felt odd and a bit unrealistic but my main gripe with this book is Flynn. I HATE Flynn he is one of THE most trash antagonists I have had the displeasure of encountering in a book. Flynn somehow did what he did without getting in trouble while getting people to believe that he was just being manipulated, these fighting VETERANS who have met and trained hundreds of people fell for this dudes obvious lies like WTF? How? On top of all that he is just the same old "I am an asshole" character with nothing else going for him. Flynn exists simply for the reader/listener to feel injustice when our MC somehow gets in trouble because all other people are (somehow) too stupid to see through Flynn's silly and I can not stress enough OBVIOUS lies. I should also mention that our MC has a flawless track record and Flynn was caught lying and not listening to guards several times.
