Good and HONEST review

I made the mistake of looking at the reviews before starting this story. I’ve always love the stories from A.E. Via, so I was surprised at the number of negative reviews.

Granted, the characters, Ty and Kel, were written differently than the other bad-a$$ “hunters” as they are called, but I felt it was a good story and well worth reading, if you liked the first four books in the Promises series.

There wasn’t really anything that I disliked about the story. Many reviewers disliked Ty, who was an alpha character, so I could see how he offended some readers. His mannerisms didn’t bother me, nor did his Muslim religious beliefs. As far as Kel’s character, again, some readers complained about him being a martial arts expert, but still “bowing down” to Ty’s wishes. I didn’t get that - at all from his character. Yes, their relationship was fairly quick and very un-Americanized, but I feel that has more to do with the religious aspect, not that Ty had all the power and Kel had none. The aspect of their relationship was more about personal respect for themselves and their bodies.

Basically, I feel that this story got bad reviews due to people’s personal views on religion and Americanized “feminist” views on relationships. Unfortunately, many reader don’t know how to objectively review a book. Not personally liking the direction of story as it was written, is not a valid reason for trashing a book as was done to this one. On a side note, I listened to the audiobook, so I can’t comment on grammatical or spelling errors as some readers had commented. Overall, I would say it is a solid 3.5-4 star story.

Its keeps getting better

Let's start with narration. Aiden Snow is the best, his deep smooth voice will keep your rapt attention. he doesn't make some of the "airy" sounds and heavy breathing you hear with some other narration. it's a quality product and I love these books even more because of him.

Now, I loved the nothing special series and had ventured into the Promises series. I liked books 1 and 2 and the series started to ware on me by 3 and 4, but I love a.e. via and wanted to stick it out and boy and I glad I did.

Promises book 5 brings some new blood into the series and writing is ridiculous because the author was able to take a faith that is so against homosexuality and bring it into the M/M world in the most loving and respectful ways imaginable. This feat was so beautifully written that I found such a profound acceptance of this story and it is now one of my favorites, because these words are a masterfully crafted art that we should pray is imitated in life.

If your familiar with the series or the author you will not be disappointed by the laughter, the heart, and the unfolding of the next generation of hunters. it's worth 1 credit and possibly even 2.

problematic

I think the characters are a great fit together and as always the narration was fantastic and I do look forward to the next book. However, a lot of the language and the way the characters were written...it's just problematic. it's like this could have been really good but the characters in their own were written poorly. The religion is an interesting aspect in this but I wasn't done well. in stead of the characters coming off as great guys with high moral standards, they come across ass dicks hiding behind religion and their upbringing to justify their judgment and behavior. As a trans person who was born female and is a Christian that has done a presentation on the Muslim faith, I will grant that this good a better job modernizing, normalizing, and easing audiences into the topics of these religions which are often very negatively stereotyped but a LOT of the terminology, diction, and syntax used regarding the morality of these characters, their views toward women, and the representation of women and transgender people was at times extremely problematic or distressing. Not every woman you meet is in a miniskirt showing her butt cheeks and trying to get in your pants. And there's nothing wrong with wearing whatever you want and looking at you as you walk by. And yeah I get you have a standard of what a man SHOULD be but you shouldn't look down on people because their standards are different. The characters' personalities and needs and values match up really well, it's cute listening to them fall in love and they have these odd little habits and characteristics that make them human and adorable. But aside from the fact that Gender roles are reinforced up there wazoo in this book, it sounds almost like this is a couple who are in their first BDSM relationship with a fulltime Dom and Sub, who have great intentions, but don't know how to do it right and that also makes me uneasy. like yeah it's cute because it works out but the one day it doesn't? scary thought. and there wasn't really any climax or great conflict in this book, just a bunch of tiny stuff. That didn't actually bother me, what bothered me was the fact that the character Kel CONTINUOUSLY proves himself as VERY capable and yet the other characters continue to treat him as a naive child or a woman in need of protection but he's not. All these little things add up and stand out and become troublesome but if you can manage to ignore them then it's fine only that might not be a healthy example if you do ignore them. It really feels like there author tried something different here, that could have been really great, but she missed the mark instead and it's a bit disappointing since there's so much potential.

my favorite of the series!

I loved – LOVED – this book! Which is no surprise as I am a big fan of AE Via and this series. However, in that series, I definitely love some books/ couples more than others and I LOVED these two together.
First because the author isn’t afraid of a little COLOR! She absolutely gave these guys unique qualities that felt very authentic and special and could only be there because of their background experiences flavoring their expressions both verbal and outward appearances. It was awesome! As a reader I get tired of all the MCs falling into “boxes” of this type of character and that type and these two – while they absolutely had some characteristics of Alpha and twink/submissive – they absolutely were NOT the typical of either of those characteristics.

I kinda felt a Malcolm X vibe from Ty and a karate kid vibe from Kell. In either case it was unique and though sometimes Kell acted in ways that weren’t always explained – he was mostly consistent and so it was ok. I had to subtract ½ a star because at the beginning Kell is described as this tough, crazy, off the rails at times vigilante and Duke and Quick have to keep bailing him out. To me, he humbled a bit too quickly and I never saw that part of his personality again. I’d have liked to see that rise to the surface now and again and see how Ty handled it/used it to his benefit against the bad guys.

In any case – while I think you can read this as a standalone I don’t think it’d be as good. There’s just too much going on with the other characters and I think this is best read in order.

Highly recommended to fans of the series/author!

Audio

Aiden did both Ty and Kell to perfection! I adored the way he handles all the various characters and accents and personalities! He’s very talented and a joy to listen to!

Highly Recommended!

Holy Hotness

I always enjoy getting together with Duke and his crew, this new generation is just as big and bad as the rest of them. I absolutely love Ty and think that the world needs more of him. He is gorgeous and strong and has an ethic that is just amazing to learn about. I really enjoyed seeing how he uses his mind and how quickly he can figure out a solution to the situations that come up. Kell is just fantastic I love that with how he looks and his age he proved that he is dynamite in a small package. Together they are unstoppable and an incredible addition to the team. I can not wait to meet more of the new guys and to see how the crew grows and changes. I love this narrator he does an amazing job encompassing all the worlds that he tackles. I love his voice and could definitely listen to him all day.

Different but intriguing

I loved the Nothing Special series and I’ve enjoyed the Promises series thus far. Via states this is a book with a different approach and it definitely is. There is a strong religious element and a lack of “steamy” scenes that you usually find in these books. That being said, I feel Via did a good job overall.

A large portion of the book is helping the reader understand Ty and his religious view point when it comes to relationships. I’ve read plenty of reviews bashing Ty’s “treatment” of women. I felt that Ty was generally respectful to women (at least to their face) he just wasn’t interested in the women available/presented in the story. In my opinion, just because he doesn’t want a woman that is more open and free with her sexuality doesn’t make him a bad man, however that’s just me. He is conservative and domineering, but I feel he was built throughout the book where I could understand and accept him (if you have an open mind).

I’m glad I listened to this and will listen again when I go through the series, but I would not want the same “steamy” pace in future books. It ABSOLUTELY fit this particular story and I’m glad extra scenes weren’t added “just because”. I’m just hoping that’s not part of the “new direction” for the series or I’ll have to give it up. Let’s get back to how frisky God, Day and the rest of them were (at least a little bit). 😉

Great!

First: My deepest condolences to the author for her lose.
Second: I couldn't wait for the audible so I bought the book and it was Great. The background for each character was heart breaking. The two different spiritual cultures coming together so easily was refreshing. I stumbled across this author and I am glad I did. I can't wait for the next books on Duke 's Bond Recovery. Keep them coming

Different

This book was considerably different than the other Bounty Hunter books. I wavered in the first half of the book and almost didn’t finish it. It took me awhile to warm up to Ty. I liked Kel and was glad that he finally had someone to love him and make him feel secure. So, it got better for me once they met and started to explore their attraction. I wish there were more books in this series! Narration was great as usual.

So sweet!!! Love the slow burn

I enjoy this genre more than any other I've read through the years. Ms. Via writes intense books and I haven't read a single one I didn't like. I'll admit I was hesitant about this one prior to listening. But cried my eyes out and cheered my MC's all the way!!! Can't wait to start the Nothing Special series a second time and fall in love all over again... right where it all began!

Breath taking (and all i did was listen)

I absolutely love the story of this book, a little to mushy and lovey-dovy for me personally at times, but extremely eye opening to how religion/believes/culture and love should work together instead of limiting and separating people! Although it may sound like it, I’m not speaking from personal experience and don’t get me wrong i love the sexy, heart stopping, action filled and ofc the juice sex scenes❤️of all the books, but i can’t explain how refreshing it is to get a good love story coupled with an incite into how love is perceived in other than the traditional western cultures.

I’m personally not religious at all and on top of that I’m a bisexual female with a slightly to big soft spot for gay erotica, but I found this story heart warming and eye opening and i send my thanks to the author and the production crew for this book ❤️ great job! And I’m looking forward to listening to you next books.

So amazingly intense!

Story: I am well accustomed with AE Via's strong characters, but the MCs in this one are a category in themselves! Both of them were so amazingly intense from the get go! The author created a breathtaking quality in two strong personalities unlike any other in this series! Absolutely loved it! And loved how their intensity bled into the relationship they built from the get go. A brilliant job and a story that I was invested in from the first minutes!
Narration: Aiden Snow yet again proved he is a master at bringing AE Via's characters to life. A strong voice that makes the story so much better! All the emotions are perfectly fitting and performed beautifully!
