Publisher's summary

A tale of 12 princesses doomed to dance until dawn…

Galen is a young soldier returning from war; Rose is one of 12 princesses condemned to dance each night for the King Under Stone. Together Galen and Rose will search for a way to break the curse that forces the princesses to dance at the midnight balls. All they need is one invisibility cloak, a black wool chain knit with enchanted silver needles, and that most critical ingredient of all - true love - to conquer their foes in the dark halls below. But malevolent forces are working against them above ground as well, and as cruel as the King Under Stone has seemed, his wrath is mere irritation compared to the evil that awaits Galen and Rose in the brighter world above.

Captivating from start to finish, Jessica Day George's take on the Grimms' tale The Twelve Dancing Princesses demonstrates yet again her mastery at spinning something entirely fresh out of a story you thought you knew.

Interesting plot

I heard the original version of this story, but Jessica Day George had a really interesting take on it, and I really enjoyed how it was all woven together.

Love it!

I truly enjoyed this book and don’t really have any critique, all in all a good read. I actually bought this book last year and listened to a few minutes of it, but did not enjoy so I returned it; this year, I was looking for a new book and found nothing I was interested in, so , I decided to try ‘Princess of the Midnight ball’ again and I’m so glad I did! I finished the book in one day. Definitely a series worth reading of you enjoy fantasy.

Such a good retelling!

I'm 28, and found this gem of a book in high school. I loved it! I just had a pining to read it again and purchased it on Audible, and it's every bit as good as I remember.
And the narrator is the best I've ever heard! Very engaging voice inflections, and gives the characters unique voices. I want her to just read everything lol!

Good set up for the next books

I actually like the middle book best. This is a very clever story, but I am afraid that the men in the kingdom don't seem so clever to me. The outcome really hangs on a lot of fortuitous circumstances. This book embraces the fashionable in-story condemnation of those who condemn witchcraft, yet like others, it undermines that representation by populating the story with malevolent spirit beings and dark sorcery.
