Hard to like MFC

So I went into this book super excited to hear Clay (MMC) and Layla’s (MFC) story after knowing snippets of their story from the other books in the series. Unfortunately it was not what I expected and kind of a let down. (Light spoilers ahead)

Let’s talk about Layla. I didn’t like her at all which sucks! She was immature, selfish, and insufferable at least 80% of the book. Her entire personality boiled down to being insecure. That’s it. No growth, no maturity—just constant pity parties and blaming everyone else for her problems. She never took responsibility either!

I thought she would have to grovel since she’s the one constantly messing everything up, but nope. Instead, the whole thing revolves around Clay bending over backward to prove himself to her. WHY?? He literally didn’t do anything wrong! He’s the perfect man! Meanwhile, Layla keeps breaking his heart, assumes things without reason, refuses to let him explain himself, and never faces any real consequences for her actions. Like girl, PLEASE take some accountability.

Oh, and speaking of bad decisions, did we really need those flashbacks where Layla falls in love with her ex, Eli, while still stringing Clay along? It made me dislike her even more. She acted more loyal and committed to Eli, a guy she barely knew for a few months, than she ever did with Clay, the man she dated for years and who has always loved her. That part really got to me. Did she even really love him because no one in their right mind would do the things she did to someone they loved or even to someone they cared about. Clay was only ever loyal, caring, and supportive and she treated him like trash throwing him away whenever she wanted and for some reason he was always there for her still after everything she did to him.

It was just really disappointing that she didn’t have to do anything to get him back. I wanted him to have more self worth and have HER prove herself to him because that makes more sense after everything she did to him. He deserved to have someone fight for him and we didn’t get that. That really messed me up because again, he did nothing wrong yet he had to win her back?! It makes no sense at all!
The only redeeming thing was Clay and Layla’s daughter’s relationship! It was so nice to watch their relationship and see a man be so gentle and kind to a child who needed a father figure.
Anyways, overall I was very disappointed and honestly, don’t waste your money on this one! I very rarely leave bad reviews and I feel bad, I just think you need to know what you’re in for before starting this book if you choose to do so! I love the authors other books but this one was not it!
