Publisher's Summary

One book, two missions, and a memory key full of secrets!

After a series of terrorist attacks on fracking sites owned by a gas multinational named Drilsink, Sir James Aiken’s agency is bought in to find the radical eco-terrorist group responsible. He sends Sam and Declan to work undercover at Imperial College where Intel suggests the group are recruiting. While Sam works behind the scenes, Declan takes on the identity of geologist Dr. Tobias Hunter and soon makes an enemy of a fellow science geek - a man who Declan comes to despise more than Sir James Aiken!

When the operation moves from London to Munich and then Vienna, Sam, and Declan are thrown headlong into a spy scenario straight out of the thriller novels they love to read - but with a distinct and disturbing sexual twist! Sam meets an old friend and uncovers shocking information about James’ past.

With Erik Madsson still imprisoned inside the ALL HQ, James comes to realize that he should have listened to his son. Keeping the enemy inside his own home is about to be the biggest mistake he has ever made.

This audiobook is an M/M romance thriller and therefore contains graphic gay sexual references.

Great series

I loved hearing more of Sam and Declan and how their relationship is growing. The book keeps you guessing what is going to happen next and the sex scenes are very hot.

Never wanted to push pause!

Powder Burns is the 5th book in the Shatterproof Bonds series. All these books build off events from previous books, so you’ll want to listen to them all and in order, as such there may be spoilers to previous books in this review. Also of note, if you haven’t read/listened to the series prequel novella, Top Hat – I would highly recommend that before this book. It can be enjoyed without, but it brings further depth to parts of the story.

At over 10 hours this is the longest of the series – but the pacing is so well done that it didn’t drag out at all. I was enthralled and didn’t want to stop listening. I am so freaking excited about this book and this series – yet it’s so hard to share how absolutely brilliant it is without spoiling anything. So many things from previous books continue to thread throughout the series in ways that make me want to immediately listen again from the beginning. I also cannot express how wonderful the mystery/suspense/thriller aspect is. You could remove every single sex scene and still have a fantastic book.

Thankfully – no one did, because the now married Sam & Declan and their sexy shenanigans are HOT. Boy do they enjoy when their undercover selves meet each other. It’s a fun and interesting twist for the couple and for the listener.

Again, this is a complete story (actually, it’s almost two stories meshed into one longer one), yet Starling sets up the tease that Sam & Declan have more missions ahead of them. Now that I’m all caught up – I’ll eagerly be awaiting another addition to the series.

Narration:
Gary Furlong continues a fabulous narration of the series. Not only does Starling add more characters in this book, but Sam & Declan have undercover personas as well. Furlong’s ability to seamlessly shift between real and pretend is amazing and brings a depth to the writing that I don’t think could be achieved through merely reading it myself. This writer/narrator team is perfection.

Too much going on...

The book was good...that's not my issue! What I struggle with is keeping everyone straight and following the plot. This book could have been two books as it was twice the length of all the other book. This was my first book with this narrator and author and yes, I bought the entire series and will definitely pick up the next book but I hope the author focus on one central plot..

Spectacular! Gary Furlong's Performance is Amazing

Isobel Starling’s Shatterproof Bond series just keeps getting better and better! The dark, intriguing story surrounding Sam and Declan continues to build in the fifth novel, Powder Burns. A wonderfully complex cast of characters keep an incredible mystery flowing along, and I’ve been continually stunned by all the twists and turns! Meant to be read in order, you need to start with As You Wish, where it all begins.

If you’re going to take the plunge, I highly recommend you do this series in audio. Performed by the amazingly talented Gary Furlong, I can’t imagine any other narrator could even come close to doing this amazing story justice. With the incredible variety of accents, dialects, and languages Ms. Starling includes in this series, I can’t help but wonder if she wrote the Shatterproof Bond series just to hear Mr. Furlong perform it.

The thing I love the most about all of Isobel Starling’s writing is that I can never tell where her stories will go next. Little details turn out to have a huge impact, things come back to haunt, and unexpected events propel the story in a completely different direction from what I’d expect, and it makes for an incredible experience.

In addition to the unique and clever plotline in the Shatterproof Bond series, Ms. Starling creates spectacular chemistry between the characters. There’s an intricate web of personalities in this cast. I’m loving the darkness of the secrets these people are keeping, and there’s no end to the depth of their depravity.

One of my favorite romance authors, Isobel Starling outdoes herself with Sam and Declan’s relationship. She blends sensual BDSM scenes, erotic power exchanges, and tender, playful games into their coupling and the result is stunning. These two men are amazing together, and for me, there’s nothing better than hearing Gary Furlong bring their lovemaking to life.

I truly thought Powder Burns was going to be the final episode of the Shatterproof Bonds series and I’m thrilled to find out there’s to be at least one more book. Starling leaves us with a brilliantly written cliffhanger, and I can’t wait to see where the adventure goes from here!

Excellent book!

The narration: I could honestly fangirl this narrator. Not only does Gary Furlong have a pleasant voice and an ability to emote, but he also a master of accents. To me, very believable accents. He takes every audiobook he narrates to the next level and I can't say enough about how much I love listening to him.

The story: After the low-key filler that book four pretty much was, Powder Burns picks right back up to Sam and Declan trying to find out who is trying to bring down Sam's father and his organization. Some leads have the two men investigating an eco-terrorist group and staying sort of separated from each other for a little bit. While Declan (and I) actually don't actually like the business of fracking, the way the terrorist group goes about their protestations is dangerous and horrific. Still they soon discover that this group is just one cog in the clockwork of people involved in the repeated attempts on Sam's life. And they also come to learn some secrets about Sam's dad that might just get them out of their service to the man. There are so many secrets and betrayals going around, it is almost delicious.

As far as the romance between Sam and Declan, things are very good with them. They have come to a place where they both trust each other implicitly. They've tied the knot and all they hope for is a relaxing peaceful life, but they need to get out from under Sir James' thumb. There wouldn't be much to say about their love story in this book, except for the fact that they both find themselves working with Alexander, Sam's former professor and lover, from the novella Silken. While the short had been a sexy little addition to the series, it is nice to see the connection between Sam's past and present. (I also want to acknowledge the cameo of Matthew from the novella Silken. I had known it was in the Shatterproof Bonds world but I loved that these characters made appearances, cementing their place in the series.) Sorry, back to the previous thought. Declan was pretty mature when it came to how he reacted to Sam's past, until he needed to come face to face with it. There are some hurtful words, without any real apology, and I don't know if it will come back to bite Sam and Declan on their butts because they didn't deal with the pain caused. I guess time will tell.

While Sam, Declan, Alexander, and Sam's computer hacker friend, Kay, do bring down some major players during this book, we are left with a crazy new cliffhanger. James' basement prisoner somehow makes his escape with a little help. From who? We don't know, but a couple guesses can be made. I don't know if this story will end with the next book or not, but I am really enjoying seeing them try to get free from their jobs and from those who want to hurt them. Sam and Declan are such a sweet and wonderful couple. As much as I want to keep reading them, I also want to see them get their happy ending. If you haven't checked out the series yet, I definitely recommend it.

I'm ready for more of Sam and Declan!

Powder Burns is the latest installment of the Shatterproof Bond series and I loved it. I have to confess that I was a bit confused in the beginning because of all the various names being tossed around. You see, I hadn't read the book and Sam and Declan, as well as other characters, assume several different personas during this story. There are also (or so it seemed to me) quite a few more characters than in previous installments.

Having said all of that, once I caught on to the various names, I was so hooked. This installment of the story seemed even more complex than the others and the audiobook was significantly longer. Declan is the one who gets the brunt of the pain in Powder Burns and some of what he goes through has him questioning Sam's loyalty to him. Sam has the most undercover identities, many of which Declan finds captivating; he was particularly fond of Kitty.

Sam and Declan have been looking for leverage against Sam's father so they can leave his organization without any repercussions and they think they have it. After their mission concludes they are anxious to get back home and have it out with Sir James. Unfortunately, fate has something else in store for them.

Powder Burns has a heart-stopping cliffhanger ending and I can't wait for the next installment. I hope Isobel Starling doesn't keep us waiting too long.

Gary Furlong turned in an even more fantastic performance than in the other books because of the wide variety of voices needed for this installment. I can't recommend this series enough.

Another Hit For This Series

I love this series and have read all the books, but listening to Gary Furlong's fantastic narration makes Isobel Starling's excellent writing and characters pop.
Married for one month now, Sam and Declan's latest assignment sends them to Imperial College to investigate an eco-terrorist group planning to attack a fracking site. This then leads them to Germany, where Declan becomes the target of the terrorist group who have framed wealthy men in sex scenes and blackmailed them to fund their terrorist activities. While hacking the servers to get the blackmail videos, they find one of particular interest to Sam and Declan that may be their way out of ALL and out from under the thumb of Sir James.
This series gets more intriguing and old story threads begin coming together as the excitement continues. Well worth the listen!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Outstanding Narration

Powder Burns is ingenious, thrilling, current, steamy and hot AF, complex, passionate, addictive, playful, intriguing and a must listen to all of Sam, Declan and Shatterproof Bond Series fans.

Gary Furlong is the BEST. His range of voices and accents is unparalleled. He easily and brilliantly goes from speaking English with Scottish, Brittish, Irish, Continental , Scandinavian and German accents; to perfectly speaking German and Danish language.

Loved listening to this audiobook . Don't even mind it ended in a BIG cliffhanger.

Amazing Story and Narration

In the fifth book in the Shatterproof Bond series, we find Sam and Declan going undercover. Declan will be Dr. Tobias Hunter, an Earth Scientist while Sam will be Kit Franklin, a Librarian. It does not take long before the two find themselves embroiled in plans to uncover the leaders of a shadowy environmental group which leads to some shocking discoveries. As the investigation takes them from London to Vienna, Sam finds himself working with an old friend and learning things about his pat he never wanted to know. Then he finds some shocking information about Sir James who is home learning that it is not a good idea to keep your enemies so close.

Powder Burns is incredibly fast paced with twists and turns that no one could expect. Sam and Declan remain in love and devoted to each other despite a few bumps along the way. You cannot help but fall in love with these two men and route for them to be successful. The plot is complex and takes us back to earlier books. I love this story with Sam and Declan and look forward to many, many more delightful hours of entertainment from the phenomenal imagination of Isobel Starling.

Gary Furlong does an amazing job with Powder Burns. He really nails the two men and the side characters. His narration will have glued to your listening device. He is fast becoming my favorite narrator.

Genius at work times two.

The Shatterproof bonds series has been one of my all time favourites. Excellent writing and a very well interwoven story. I was so glad the story wasn’t over when I got to the end. And OMG the narration... I honestly can’t believe it’s one guy. Gary Furlong is an absolute genius.

Detailed plot

It's no secret that I love narration by Gary Furlong and, in this audiobook, he once again excels. The roll call of characters is quite extensive in Powder Burns, so lots of scope for different voices, and even accents and speaking in foreign languages. I am particularly impressed with the German! In between voices, the story is told in crisp English tones.

Now...confession time. This is the first book in the Shatterproof Bonds series that I have read or listened to. I found it easy to jump right in and enough of the backstory is there so that I didn't feel confused. The plot is detailed enough that I could lose myself in it, which is something I need in these troubled times.

I read a couple of chapters and listened to a few more, so became aware of the typos in the ebook. Fortunately these didn't cross over into the audio version. That is my only negative point. I will definitely go back now and read the other 4 books.

AN AMAZING M/M THRILLER

This was such an exciting listen. As expected, after listening to the rest of the series, Gary Furlong inhabited the characters of Sam and Declan. I have waited for a few years for this book and I was not disappointed. It kept me on the edge of my seat. The story sees Sam and Declan parted for separate missions and so they have to find ways of being together in secret. The writing was sublime, and the themes are very much current, with climate change and anti-fracking linked to Eco-terrorism.
There are quite a few surprises in this book and the ending left me wanting more. If you haven't started this series yet. DO IT!
