The year is 1985: Nintendo has just hit the shelves, jean jackets are rad, MTV still plays music, and magic is very, very real.

Jennifer Knight is fresh out of high school, still lives in her alcoholic mother’s house, has no car, and is so over everything, she’s taken to shoplifting simply for the fun of it. Of course, nicking what doesn’t belong to you is a whole lot easier when you possess a magic jewelry box with the power to make anything disappear.

When a supernatural being with mysterious powers and suspect motives comes calling, however, it turns out Jen’s once dull, ordinary life is actually just window dressing - and that behind the curtain lies a whimsical world rife with wizards, wereskunks, and pot-smoking garden gnomes.

In time and with the “aid” of her newfound acquaintance, Jen will find answers to questions she never thought to ask. Questions like “why can’t my mother talk about my father?” or “why is my rocker boyfriend never around when the full moon is out?” or “how suicidal do you have to be to rip off a wizard cabal on a dare?”
The answer? Very.

But then you know what they say...ask not what magic can do for you, but what you can do for magic.

I listen to books on my commute and found myself sitting in the car when I got there just to see what was going to happen next. The descriptions make it easy to visualize (often difficult for me when reading about magical mythical beings). It feels real and plausible. Not once did I think " oh come on, seriously?". I can't wait to start the next book on my way to work tomorrow.
The narrator is perfect, in my opinion. I feel like the main character is telling the story.
Great read!

wasn't sure it would be my thing but I loved it

I ran upon this book like usual, mostly by accident. There were no reviews but I played the little excerpt and took a chance. I liked it a lot .. enough that upon *almost* finishing this book I am going to purchase the next one. Seems to me that this is perhaps the best indication of a story when you want to see what happens next.

In some respects this reminds me of "Sunshine" by Robin McKinley in that .. we are brought into this alternate world from inside the mind of a young woman. This is not quick but a slowly developing and methodical journey.

I've come to really like Jennifer. That is not always true for a MC .. she is probably too strong a character for many people .. such Alpha's tend to rub people wrong I guess.
