“Dunmore is my new find in historical romance. Her A League of Extraordinary Women series is extraordinary.”—Julia Quinn, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“This series balances friendship, politics, history, and romance in just the right mix.”—U.S. Representative Katie Porter

Going toe-to-toe with a brooding Scotsman is rather bold for a respectable suffragist, but when he happens to be one's unexpected husband, what else is an unwilling bride to do?

London banking heiress Hattie Greenfield wanted just three things in life:

  1. Acclaim as an artist.
  2. A noble cause.
  3. Marriage to a young lord who puts the gentle in gentleman.

Why, then, does this Oxford scholar find herself at the altar with the darkly attractive financier Lucian Blackstone, whose murky past and ruthless business practices strike fear into the hearts of Britain's peerage? Trust Hattie to take an invigorating little adventure too far. Now she's stuck with a churlish Scot who just might be the end of her ambitions...

When the daughter of his business rival all but falls into his lap, Lucian sees opportunity. As a self-made man, he has vast wealth but holds little power, and Hattie might be the key to finally setting long-harbored political plans in motion. Driven by an old desire for revenge, he has no room for his new wife's apprehensions or romantic notions, bewitching as he finds her.

But a sudden journey to Scotland paints everything in a different light. Hattie slowly sees the real Lucian and realizes she could win everything—as long as she is prepared to lose her heart.

This is a superbly written story and performed exceptionally . I realize many reviews take exception with the ending But, it makes perfect sense and is also very satisfying

Historically appropriate and spicy to boot

Wonderful! A timely read for me, as I‘m heading off to Scotland in May for two weeks and we will be visiting Balmoral, which is near to the setting in the story. Super good narration.

Delightful...

The spice. The romance. The history, not necessarily in that order but you know…loved it!

Great Read

I have loved this series and found that this installment was just as a strong as the others, albeit this one had a more serious tone. I was a little afraid of the ending based on other reviewers, but I actually found it powerful and really identified with Hattie’s inner struggle on sense of self vs societal identity. Dunmore’s ability to weave in history was as masterful as ever.

A great read, though heavier than first two

I really liked listening to this story. I couldn’t stop listening to it actually; however, the audiobook reader put me off with the Scottish accent. I get that it may have been hard to do ergo why she was good as Harriet but not as Lucien. All in all, great story and not what I expected at all from title alone.

Not What I thought

Loved the characters and story. Beautifully unfolded with lots of interesting things to think about thrown in alongside the story.

Beautiful and thoughtful romance

Luscious' personality is too unbelievable. And, Hariett is such a spoiled brat. I didn't like how she left her husband, basically 3 times, especially the 3rd time. This was my last favorite of the 3 books in the series. It had so much potential, too. Not sure if I'll read the 4th one when it comes out now.

Unfortunately unbelievable and not in a good way.

Evie writes great historical fiction and romance! The narrator does such a great job with Blackstone’s voice!

Masterful writer and masterful voice artist!

Let me start by saying I LOVE Evi Dunmore and I have enjoyed this series, but the heroine in this story is hard to like. She jumps to conclusions, and tries to run which appears childish instead of brave. In Evi’a previous books the characters have their faults, but you see them grow into themselves and grand gestures of learning to compromise as they fall in love without breaking their spirits…Hattie wasn’t that character and the while the book still boast a HEA…It’s no thanks to the heroine asking someone who has been trampled on his whole life to continue suffering for her ego. All in all it’s still a good story but be ready to be frustrated by Hattie and keep your fingers crossed Catrina’s story is better.

Least favorite Evi Dunmore heroine

Okay, first things first. Of this four-book series, I've completed Books 1, 2 and 3. I'm waiting for my sister to catch up in the series so that we can listen to Book 4 at the same time. Because this book series is just that good! The writing is first rate and the narration is absolutely stellar. The characters and plots are fresh. But it's how Ms. Dunmore bridges the books that garners my highest praise in writing. Book 3 is my favorite so far. As for the romantic parts....[trying to catch my breath here...] Please Pass The Cold Water!

Oh, my word!
