Audiobook two of the Dark Imperium trilogy.

As the Plague Wars rage on, the Emperor's will manifests in Ultramar through miracles that confound the primarch Roboute Guilliman, even as he must rely on them when he faces his traitorous brother, Mortarion.

Listen to it because

The battle between faith and science lies at the heart of Warhammer 40,000. Guy Haley explores it here as never before, through the eyes of Roboute Guilliman - the ultimate believer in rationality and the Imperial Truth.

The story

In the void and upon the worlds of Greater Ultramar, the battle for the Imperium continues.

Intent on rebuilding his home realm and using it as a base to reconstruct the ravaged stellar empire of mankind, the returned primarch, Roboute Guilliman, proceeds with his war to drive Mortarion and his Death Guard Traitor Legion from the domain of the Ultramarines.

But when Guilliman brings his brother to battle upon the diseased plains of Parmenio, the intervention of a greater power in their fraternal struggle threatens to upend the Imperial Regent’s understanding of the galaxy, and his place within it.

Primarchs and ideologies clash in this thrilling second part of the Dark Imperium trilogy.

Written by Guy Haley. Narrated by John Banks.

The undertone of religious affirmation vs scientific truth prevalent in the series continues in, and is expertly brought to the forefront in this audio book. Guy Haley, for me, is now the definitive voice and soul of Guilliman and John Banks' narration gives the words of the Primarch an unparalleled sense of weight and gravitas. The troop and engine movements of the titan legions, expertly done. The struggles and machinations of the baseline human and the Ecclesiarchy, eye opening and hammers home the depths of their devotion. Guilliman is truly a fish out of water in this time and his struggles with the truth of what the imperium has become is riveting to read.

Highly recommend this audio book. 11/10.

Absolutely outstanding literature and perfomance

Even better the second time around. The re-writes place the story better within the ever expanding lore of the 42st Millennium.

Good Book

Guilliman yelled at a priest and called him an idiot. For that scene alone I rate it 20/10.

Great book. It was a slow burn at first, and the stuff about the nova marines could have been thrown out… but we get to see some of the best moments of Guilliman.

Guy Haley strikes again.

A great book with fantastic character development for all involved. A bit light on Guiliman content but still a great read!

A fantastic middle story

It’s overall better than the first book in this Dark Imperium series, that’s for certain, but its best sections are strangely… disconnected?

It’s hard to feel like there’s an overall flow or through line in some of the story, and it isn’t just a series of ‘and then this happened and then this happens and then-’. I enjoyed it far more than I had the first, especially with its climax actually feeling like it had some real weight rather than the previous books, ‘We need a big fight scene so idk throw a dragon in there I guess.’ But I struggle to connect each of the overall stories and narrations together.

Also, more of a minor note but the narrator uses a pretty similar voice for pretty much all the space marines, so I found Felix and Justinians stories kind of swimming together until active combat engaged them and made their stories far more divergent. His Nurgle-faction voices are amazing, however, and he has a really great Primarch voice for the main event with Big G. Honestly there’s even a little criticism there, because it’s such a good job that it makes me wish his Mortarian was a little… *more.*

Overall, Plague Wars is certainly well written, but at times it can feel a bit too much like a series of events rather than actually tying each narrative together. However, with its improved writing over the first novel, I am anticipating that the next book’s finale will be more conclusive and engaging on that front!

Good, but a bit strange

This series does start out a bit slow but it’s during this novel, the second of three, that things really begin to build. Both Guy Haley and John Banks have done a great job.

I never thought that this would be something that I would ever even think, but the author and the narrator have made some of Nurgle’s demons actually…adorable. Yeah, I know. How the heck do you make utterly alien and evil creatures that revel in decay and rot adorable? That shouldn’t be possible, but they sure pulled it off. The forces of Nurgle are the real stars of this series and while the Ultramarines are pretty cool in these three novels they’re not the true shining stars, not even the mighty Primarch Roboute. I would very much like for Guy Haley to write some novels that focus almost entirely on Nurgle, its minions, Mortarion, Typhus, and the Death Guard and that John Banks narrates it. One word of caution- there are times that Mr. Banks will (appropriately) raise his voice and even yell, and if you’re listening to this audiobook while wearing earbuds/headphones it could cause the listener a little ear pain.

Quite Enjoyable and Entertaining!
