Orphaned Carmen is sixteen, newly homeless and will do almost anything to survive and keep her and her kid brother safe, together, and out of foster care. Ollie, also sixteen, has a life that's all about parents, school pressure, friends, and dreams of summer. The two fall into each other's orbit, and one kiss changes everything. Ollie is captivated . . . but then Carmen vanishes. When they cross paths months later, everything is different.

A young adult queer romance that looks at what we're prepared to sacrifice for those we care about.

Contains mature themes.

G. Benson is an author that I trust to tell stories that have characters going through tough times and finding love. Pieces is a great example of characters struggling through hard choices and making difficult decisions while finding love. Another excellent story.

Heartbreaking at times, but well written

narration was lacking. no inflection of tone. the internal dialogue is a little heavy, and sometimes it felt like there was too much description in the scenes. nonetheless, the story is heartwrenching and the overall takeaway is that this is a great book. i enjoyed reading it once I pushed through the beginning

Slow start, but glad I stuck with it

Very touching story. Growing up my family shared our home with many children in the foster care system and this story is very true when it comes to children in the system. My hope is many more folks with a good heart will open their homes as so many children are left behind. Thank you for this story and bringing these type of issues to light.

Perfect Title! T

I loved It. Complex characters you can relate to with a moving story line that made me keep listening for hours. Immediately after it was over I added it to my list of favorites.

It's sad that Carmen had at 9 yrs old had to practically start raising her brother. Bad foster homes messed up Matty and caused Carmen to run away at 13. She was lucky to find Gina and Dex who lived in any old warehouse helping out street kids. Carmen at 16 and Matty at 8 go back into the system when their mother dies. They are being separated once again and neither can deal with that. So they both run this time.

Ollie and Carmen have only been together a few times, but can't get each other out of their minds. After months of losing Carmen, she finds her working at a bar. A place a barely 17 yr old shouldn't be working, but has fake ID. Their sparks for each other is still there, but loss and fear haunts them both. Ollie's (Olivia) dad is accepting of this daughter's bisexual status and really like Carmen.

He helps Carmen out a lot with a low cost apt and a lawyer to try and win guardianship of her brother now that she is turning 18. Things finally start to turn around for Carmen.

CFS and Foster Homes are so imperfect
