Publisher's Summary

After being court-martialed by the Space Legion for ordering the strafing of a treaty-signing ceremony, multimillionaire Willard Phule receives his punishment: He must command the misfit Omega Company on Haskin's Planet, a mining settlement on the edge of settled space. At his duty station, he leverages his personal money and a knack for managing people to get the company to come together as a unit. Phule convinces the governor to leave the contract for an honorary duty up for competition between the Space Legionnaires and the Regular Army. The Army sends some of their most elite troops to take part in the competition, but Phule's company operates with their own unique tactics....

LOVED the whole experience!

I was thrilled to find this Robert Asprin book finally made it to an audio version. I've read the book many many times over the years. The reader they chose was great! Looking forward to hopefully more books in this series brought to an audio format.

A fun listen.

What made the experience of listening to Phule's Company the most enjoyable?

A nice book to listen to when you just want to relax and listen to something but don't want to have to follow it too closely. It was funny, fun, and performed well. No complaints worth mentioning.

Refreshing

I first read this book over 20 years ago and could never find it in a library or book store after that. Then I got lucking and found the whole series at a used book store and even in my 30's I still enjoyed every long night reading these books. Then Tantor comes out of left field and makes it an audio book, not only that but a very well done version too.

The misfits of the Omega Mob are great and now that I can sit back and just enjoy their antics it's even better. Do yourself a favor and give this one a listen, it's lighthearted, intriguing, and funny. You won't regret it.

A Forerunner of Comic Military Sci-fi

As a fan of both Robert Asprin's other series and of military science fiction, I love Phule and his motley crew's excapades. While it's not nearly as irreverent and fantastic, the feel this particular Phule adventure invokes in me is somewhat that if a prototypical Red Vs. Blue, particularly the first season of said show; a slice-of-life vignette about a bunch of misfits.
I find this story is somewhat thin in plot, being mostly an introduction to Phule's character and how he handles his dealings, but it more than makes up for it in the snappy dialog of the noted members of the ubiquitous omega company.
Coming back to this series after many years and having only read the later book Phule's Errand in my teens, I was pleasantly surprised, as I erroneously remembered it as a "Richie Rich" style comedy of errors about a spoiled dandy who buys his way through everything.
Phule, as he does with so many he encounters, shattered my expectations.

Still an awesome listen too.

My husband and I have recently gotten into audiobooks. Sometimes the narrators are good and sometimes not so much. We were recently looking for a new read/listen to when we remembered Piers Anthony. We started with “Another Fine Myth”, aNd although it was awesome, we had already read the series. So we decided to dig into a new book by the same favorite author in which we had not read. Imagine our happy surprise when we started “Phule’s Company” and not only enjoyed the authors work, but the narrators as well. We plan to read/Listen to the rest of this series. This is definitely a must listen to.

Takes a bit to get going -

I almost gave up a few chapters in. But I decided to keep going and was surprised when the story picked up. I liked it enough to buy the next book. My favorite part was when the unit was competing against a highly decorated army unit; it made me smile. The narrator was awesome. I have not previously heard him - if I have the chance to listen to another book that he narrates, I would not hesitate.

Brilliant Book

Any additional comments?

I came back to audible after finishing the book to find any other in the series to buy but unfortunately there isn't any more yet. I guess I'll have to wait. I loved the book, I was rapt in in the whole time. Too short for how good it was. I can't wait for the next one. I always like that kind of character, who is full of wit and act decisively in any situation.

Sexist

This author just can't seem to describe a woman without commenting on her attractiveness, her breasts or her bum. He does this constantly, even long after we've got to know the characters. It's relentless. Does he ever comment on the male characters shapely testicals or how attractive they are? Of course not. The author even does an honest to goodness no-homo at one point. I know this was written in the 90s but it really hasn't aged well.

Also, the story is about the 1% solving every situation by throwing money at problems. That side hasn't aged super well either.

Fantastic!

Read this book back in the day and thought I would give the audiobook a go. I was not disappointed. The story was just as good as I remembered and the audio delivery by Noah was superb! I love Robert Aspirin’s books, each and every one, and listening to this felt like visiting old friends. I will most definitely be getting all that audible has to offer.

Audii Didn't Disappoint

Possibly my all time favourite set of books. Very enjoyable and easy to read. I've read and re-read them all and love the characters and style. This audio version is great. Please hurry and release the rest.
