Publisher's Summary

The daunting task that confronts Gurney, once the NYPD's top homicide cop: determining the guilt or innocence of a woman already convicted of shooting her charismatic politician husband. Gurney quickly finds himself waging a dangerous battle of wits with a thoroughly corrupt investigator, a disturbingly cordial mob boss, a gorgeous young temptress, and a bizarre assassin whose childlike appearance has earned him the nickname Peter Pan. But the identity of the villain at the mystery's center turns out to be the biggest shock of all....

A Dull Book - DNF

This is the forth book in the series and the first one was good but it went downhill from there. I try to avoid series altogether unless I like the first book, but I took a chance on this one because Gurney's character seemed so intriguing. Boy, was I wrong.

I have to say that many people love this book but it was was too dull and slow for me.

Gurney and his Madeline (I can't even remember the correct spelling of her name) are two of the most annoying characters I have ever encountered. Madeline and the chicken coop, and Gurney with his "You may be right." It was his all-purpose response - to the friendly and the furious, the sane and the insane.'

Can SOMETHING happen, please? Or will it all be new age, passive aggressive chat?

6 Hours left of a 15 hour book and I can't go on. This is one of the very few books that I simply cannot finish. I found myself dreading going back to these characters . I am giving 2 stars because the scene with Angelidis actually read true. Otherwise, 1 star because I avoid people like these navel gazers in real life.

Jeff Harding was dull with the delivery of the story as well.

Gripping Psychological thriller

Jeff Harding brings Dave Gurney and his co-worker and intolerable friend Jack Hardwick to life more and more as each book goes on. I would love to listen to the next 2 books in the series but I won't be. Jeff Harding must record Wolf Lake and the next book after it. Continuity is very important when you have built up a mental image of all the characters. Jeff Harding is also brilliant with the Jack Reacher book series. He tells the story so you feel like you are in it. A fantastic book that I was sad that I had finished it so quickly.

Page turner with hero

Certainly up to usual standard and I love Jeff Harding's narration.
Also like the fact that relationships underpin the action.

Dave Gurney overload

Loved the first three books but this one was one too many. Jeff Harding (who I really rate) lost the characters (especially Hardwicke) Dave’s wife became a total PIA. The plot was ok if a little too “fantastic “
Time for me to listen to something else.

Great author, great narrator but THE worst D.G. yet

Could NOT believe this far-fetched and frankly absurd story could be penned by John Verdon. I've bought all of his Dave Gurney books and while the stories often require a suspension of disbelief, the quality of writing and the great characters have always made it worth the journey. Not so with this book. I could not wait to finish it and forget it's gratuitous violence and absurdity forever. If I didn't have a wealth of respect for the author I would have thrown in the towel well before the end,

Great Listen

This is the third of Verdon’s books that I have listened to and each time I find myself warming even more to the chief characters which have life-like nuances, indeed credible personalities. Jeff Harding‘s narration has also become more versatile and pleasing, with less of the monotone I have rather regretted in the past (Jack Reacher novels). The super-villain subjects of his investigations have to be twisted and complex in order properly to showcase his extraordinary abilities!
