In a new and major novel, the creator of fantastic universes of vampires and witches takes us now into the world of Isaiah and Jeremiah and the destruction of Solomon's Temple, to tell the story of Azriel, Servant of the Bones. He is ghost, genii, demon, angel - pure spirit made visible. Story
In a sweeping saga of music and vengeance, the acclaimed author of The Vampire Chronicles draws listeners into 18th-century Italy, bringing to life the decadence beneath the shimmering surface of Venice, the wild frivolity of Naples, and the magnetic terror of its shadow, Vesuvius. This is the story of the castrati, the exquisite and otherworldly sopranos whose graceful bodies and glorious voices win the adulation of royal courts and grand opera houses throughout Europe. These men are revered as idols - and, at the same time, scorned for all they are not.

Publisher's Summary
The novel opens in present day Paris in a crowded café, where David meets Pandora. She is 2,000 years old, a child of the millennia, the first vampire ever made by the great Marius. David persuades her to tell the story of her life through the ages.
Pandora carries you back to her mortal girlhood in the world of Caesar Augustus, where she meets and falls in love with the handsome, charismatic, lighthearted, still-mortal Marius. She is forced to flee in fear of assassination by conspirators plotting to take over the city. You then follow her to the exotic port of Antioch, where she is destined to be reunited with Marius, now immortal and haunted by his vampire nature, who will bestow on her the Dark Gift as they set out on the fraught and fantastic adventure of their two turbulent centuries together.
Pandora is Volume 1 of The New Tales of the Vampires.

Great Performance of a Good Story
Janet McTeer's performance as Pandora is spectacular. I would love to listen to her do more books from this series. (Or at least the unabridged version of this one). A talented reader makes a huge difference. I hope she continues making more audiobooks.
The story itself is good, we get a deep look at the history of the main character, a female vampire named Pandora. I personally would have liked to see a little more action for a vampire story, but it was still good overall.

Once Lydia, Now Pandora
I really enjoyed Janet McTeer's narration. Completely believable and I was able to see the story being told. Although very short, still entertaining. I liked it. I really did. I'd love to explore more of the love shared by Pandora and Marius. Will she find him in New Orleans? What dark being awaits Pandora's arrival? The vampire Lestat?!

Story
Raised like sisters, Mariamne and Salome are indulged with riches and learning - a rare thing for females in ancient Jerusalem. But Mariamne has a further gift: an illness has left her with the power of prophecy. After seven years in exile, they return to a Judea, where many now believe John the Baptizer is the messiah. Salome too begins to believe, but Mariamne, now called Magdalene, is drawn to his cousin, Yeshu'a, a man touched by the divine in the same way she was during her days of illness.

We are in a small room with the vampire, face-to-face, as he speaks - as he pours out the hypnotic, shocking, moving, and erotically charged confessions of his first 200 years as one of the living dead...He speaks quietly, plainly, even gently...carrying us back to the night when he departed human existence as heir - young, romantic, cultivated - to a great Louisiana plantation, and was inducted by the radiant and sinister Lestat into the other, the "endless", life...
