About this listen

In a steam-filled diner in a college town, Flannery Jansen catches sight of something more beautiful than she's ever seen: a graduate student, reading. The 17-year-old, new to everything around her - college, the East Coast, bodies of literature, and the sexual flurries of student life - is shocked by her desire to follow this wherever it will take her. When Flannery finds herself enrolled in a class with the remote, brilliant older woman, she is intimidated at first, but gradually becomes Anne Arden's student - Baudelaire, lipstick colors, or how to travel with a lover - Flannery proves an eager pupil, until one day learns more about Anne than she ever wanted to know.

Achingly beautiful

Lyrically and beautifully written. Heartbreakingly rendered story of deep love and the seasons it passes through.

A good book

I always feel that if a book is narrated by Abby Craden it will be superb this one was just good I am looking forward to listening to the sequel because maybe I didn’t enjoy the first part as it is more a discovery story and at least one of the main characters is very young.
Off to the second book

A gorgeous listen

This is a devastatingly beautiful literary work, comparable in quality with Fiona Shaw's Tell It To the Bees. Emotionally, experiencing it is like gazing upon a magnificent painting. Brace yourself for this one, folks, but it's worth it. For fans of Abby Craden, this is a must-listen. She is at her finest here and it is apparent why she is considered one of the best narrators in the business. My heart is still feeling this - I don't think I'll shake it anytime soon.

Flowery but Over all Unremarkable

Although this is well written and beautifly descriptive at the begining, it seemed to me to be an unremarkable story of first love. It is almost typical of the student that falls for her older, wiser and more worldly professor. Yes, it's two women, but without details of their love making or specifically describing what or how. Not even a mention of a meeting of their breasts. Bad me for wanting more.
The ending to me was a huge disappointment, although expected. Bisexual women should call themselves "Bi" and not to pretend to be what they are not, lesbian.
Abby Creden's naration is the best part of the storytelling.

Nostalgic

I read this book over 20 years ago. Listening to it here brought me back 2 decades and induced the vertigo of memory. Such a great story, I loved it!!

Lyrical, wistful, heartbreaking, hopeful

I guess this book is considered gay lit but I had no problem relating to it as a straight man. Ended too soon. (On to the sequel!)

Excellent narration.

Realistic story of 1st love

I didn’t like the way it ended but many first loves end that way. Story well written.
