Story
Each of us has a dual nature: we are light (conscious) and dark (unconscious). The dark side of our personality - the “other,” the shadow side - is made up of what we think is our primitive, primal, negative impulses - our “existential kink.” Our existential kink also drives the dark or negative repeating patterns in our life: always choosing the abusive partner or boss, settling for less, thinking that we’re undeserving, not worthy. But it also is the source of our greatest power.

Trauma is a fact of life. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Too Much Filler

Publisher's summary
For years, we've been telling ourselves that our difficult feelings - sadness, rage, shame, intensity, worry - are somehow "not okay". And, all too often, we've relied on the promise of pharmaceuticals to tamp them down. The fact is, though, that these feelings are a vital part of our experience. They are real. And those of us who feel them most strongly are the canaries in the coalmine - sensitive to things that are seriously wrong in the world today.
In a book that's both provocative and promising, holistic psychiatrist Kelly Brogan, MD, author of A Mind of Your Own, shows us that we don't have to medicate our mental, emotional, and physical pain away - that the best way out is through. She explodes the mistaken belief that our symptoms - from mood changes to irritability to fogginess and fatigue - are evidence that we are sick or broken. Then she charts a new path to get real, get well, and get free. The journey includes:
- Coming to a new appreciation of the meaning behind symptoms, and whether you are a canary in the coal mine
- Learning the two major risks of medication that most doctors are not trained to disclose
- Exploring the five reversible physical drivers of so-called mental illness
- Starting the process of radical physical healing with inclusive details of Dr. Brogan's history-making 30-day protocol
- Taking an emotional inventory of energy drains and toxic relationships
- Taking a deeper dive into the spiritual awakening and expansion that comes when you reclaim your real self from conventional medicine
- Identifying the most likely places you have given your power away
- Understanding what the science has to say about psychedelics as a tool for awakening
- Navigating health challenges with curiosity and the proper tools
- Guidance, support, and many Travel Tips shared from the trenches!
Our experiences, Dr. Brogan argues, aren't problems or pathologies; they reflect what we need to accept, acknowledge, and transform in order to truly become who we are. Own Your Self is a journey of healing, and also something more: a journey of coming home to ourselves.

There is a mountain of very helpful information here that should not be ignored or taken lightly - particularly if you have been prescribed medication for any mental health issues. It's likely that the author gets chastised for her revolutionary approach by Psychologists and Medical Doctors alike, as she is directly challenging the fix-it-with-a-pill mentality that contemporary health care in the US tends to champion. Some of the author's recommendations, particularly from a diet standpoint, could likely change and possibly save lives. They are harmless to try (such as eating more healthy fats to regulate blood sugar with the goal of reducing mood swings) and well worth the effort when considering the weighty alternatives. That said, the author takes issue with vaccines, and antibiotics, so please read this book critically, and use your own judgement when moving forward.
Audible provided a laughable 6 page recipe book, included as a pdf. There's so much content that could have, and SHOULD have been included - such as an outline of the 30 day regimen. Audible, you can do better.
This book is very well resourced, however it's impossible to review sources from the audiobook.
I recommend purchasing a print copy and saving your Audible credit.

Anti-vaxer beware
I was digging this book until about the 4th chapter when Kelly gets extreme and says that she doesn’t believe in any medication what-so-ever. No Tylenol, no chemo if you have cancer, and no vaccinations. I was hoping to find a piece of mind and some practical ways I could deal with depression and anxiety on my own without medication but her views on all medication are so extreme I had to stop listening. She also mentions you need to take responsibility for your childhood traumas which feels victim blame-y to me. Perhaps she meant that you need to take responsibility for the way it shows up in your adult life but she could have been WAY more clear.

EXCELLENT!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is working with an autoimmune condition or is challenged by psychological phenomena of any kind. Owning a hard copy, as well as the Audible version, is the way to go if you can afford to do so. The best thing about the audio book is that it is read by the author. Owning it is like having Kelly Brogan herself cheering me on as I go about my day-to-day life. The PDF, which accompanies the audio, contains the recipes in the book, which is very helpful. But the book itself is an extraordinary resource that you don't want to miss. I have been studying health, psychology, nutrition and supplements for many years and I have to say, Kelly Brogan and her team know their stuff. And it's all laid out for you. The book is well indexed and contains detailed references. Buy the audiobook if you love Kelly Brogan's work as much as I do. But do yourself a favor and buy the print version also.

Coffee enemas and germs aren’t real
Those two things right there lost me. There is good stuff in there. But you have to cringe through some of these things. Plus, I think this section about swapping out chemical laden products for clean is only an option for a certain socioeconomic class. She talks about getting new “clean” mattresses and flooring.

Life changing:
Having read her first book and gone through the Vital Mind Reset program, I knew this book would be good. I knew it would be chalk full of powerful messages that make so much sense they re-define “truth.”
What I wasn’t prepared for was how personal the messages and information in the book would be. I came so close to tears so many times that if I weren’t on a plane I think I might have had a complete break-down - the kind that serves as a “coming home.” A feeling that I didn’t even know I’d been craving. It’s hard to describe the complete feeling of peace that I experienced when I finished. I know the work is hard but I don’t know how one can read the. Oil and then not want to dive right in...
Thank you Kelly Brogan. Thank you. Please keep sharing your wisdom.
I listened to the book on audio and I highly recommend it - I will now buy the book so I can go back through and highlight and reference.

Conspiracy and false information
This author lost her credentials, is spreading misinformation about germs not really existing, vaccines containing micro-chips, and saying modern medicine has never actually been needed.
I have healed myself from depression with a combination of changing my diet, regular exercise, and lots of cognitive practices for changing my thinking. I am all into that, but I am not ready to say that germs don't exist, and the government is trying to take control of us via Covid.
This author also has a subscription-only program that doesn't feel right to me.

A war cry to healing
I would follow Kelly into battle. She is the leader we knew we needed and more! Her fierce and loving introduction to healing and self empowerment is spot on, and resonates with many who seek to pivot away from establishments.
Dr. Brogan is the real deal, she puts her patients first, and is all about informed consent! how cool is that :) a great read for anyone whether you yourself need to heal, or a loved one. Get ready for "radical healing" as she calls it.

Get this and cure your depression too!
Kelly Brogan legit changed my life with A Mind of Your Own, and this follow-up is just as powerful!! Own Your Self does revisit a number of the topics already detailed in A Mind of Your Own but it didn’t feel redundant because so much great new info is offered in this book. I love her straight-forward writing style, and her “performance” reading for the Own Your Self was just absolutely perfect. I can’t afford to do her online programs or even some of her detoxing suggestions like coffee enemas but her protocol has still had such a profound impact on me I have not been depressed in over a year and am successfully tapering off my medication and continually moving forward on my path to healing. I could not have regained my power in life (more like I gained it for the first time ever) without her. Buy this book for yourself and listen with an open mind. You’ll be glad you did. I am never turning back <3

This book is life changing!
If you want a roadmap to deepening your relationship with your truest self, and unfolding into the kind of life you’ve dreamed of-read this book. It’s a game changer. Dr. Kelly Brogan is a force of nature. Her psychiatric practice is scientifically based, and soulfully grounded in the universal truth that each person’s body has, at their core, all the answers they need for healing. I would say it’s magic, but it’s better. #functionalmedicine #mindbodymedicine #selfcare #fun

I didn’t realise this was geared towards those who are on medication and helping them to wean off of it. For me I’m medication free and already have practiced many of the suggestions in the book for many years now, however, if you are new to them then this book would we great.

If you’ve been on psych meds you’ve probably already had the feeling that they are not ‘fixing’ anything that is wrong with you, otherwise wouldn’t you be feeling a bit more whole, a bit more joyful? From my personal experience it’s been evident that these medications were only ever bandaging over difficult emotions, leaving me in a bleak arena where I could neither laugh nor cry (at best). You may have been lead to believe that that is really the best that you can hope for in this life. Dr. Kelly Brogan holds a very different expectation for her patients, course participants and her readers. She sets the bar high, because she knows what is possible for each and every one of us. Through deceptively simple lifestyle changes, faith, a community of like minds and not to mention a certain level of courage (or sheer desperation) to propel you into a new story of your life you will begin to see what is possible for you too. I have found this book to be one of hope and possibility and it reinforces a belief in me that I can heal, I will heal, and so will you. It tells a more beautiful story of what it means to struggle and where it can take you if you only let it. The book is overflowing with information and resources to call upon as you traverse your darkest hours and Kelly has been exceedingly generous in taking all she has learnt both professionally and in her private life and sharing it with her readers. There are for sure some hard truths, but it is only in service of reaching your highest potential. I will be forever grateful to have found this woman’s work. So Get Real, Get Well and Get Free, your ROI will be nothing short of priceless!

Thank You
A much needed change of approach and attitude towards the treatment of mental health. This book is also so valuable for general personal development. I really love the section on parenting, so needed in the world today. Nicely read. totallt recommended.

Identified and share a lot dark night well
there are some parts I don't agree with like the yoga and witchcraft like tips. in the end when the author acknowledged her coven, I wonder what I had listened to. But all the experiences and sharing were very much useful

Tedious
Couldn't finish. Very technical. Also, concepts that I found to be a bit too radical for me. Don't take the pill, don't vaccinate, don't even take a Panadol ..just do dancing meditations and eat red meat and you'll be right.
