Natalie Barns is falling apart. Since returning from Fourline, she's tried desperately to focus on the world in front of her - the one of classes, money, and family. But the wound in Natalie's shoulder from her final encounter with the Nala radiates pain constantly throughout her days, while her nights are tormented by terrifying dreams of the Nala - and of Soris, the rebel fighter she failed to protect.

Seeking refuge from what plagues her, Natalie returns to the costume shop and discovers her wound is much more dangerous than she ever could have imagined. What she learns sets her on an inexorable path back to the kingdom of Fourline. If she's to have a chance of survival, she must confront Soris' fate and the fears that have been festering in her heart - or the Nala remnant will change her life forever.

Good book, but the protagonist is accepting responsibility and guilt for things that were not only not her fault, but clearly the responsibility of those giving her grief. If that byplay was removed it would be a great book.

She's a really strong character in other situations, so it doesn't make a lot of sense for her to be craving the approval of someone she actively dislikes.

Another hero accepting blame where they shouldn't.

I can't wait to listen to the last book. The heroine is hopeful and brave. I enjoy a strong female lead. For where she's at in her journey, she is courageous and maybe a tad clumsy. In the first book she didn't have a lot of knowledge but in the she's gaining knowledge and taking action.

I have to admit that despite myself, I am hooked on this trilogy. Waiting until May to read the third and finish the story will be tough! As for this book, I enjoyed the overall story and was glad to see the action/suspense feeling created in the first book return. The author did better, I think, in character development with this book than the last. I also very much appreciated the parallels drawn between racism in Fourline and Natalie's world, as well as Natalie's own recognition that even she is not blameless in that area. Without giving too much away, I'll say that I'm glad Natalie was at least given better skills before her second trip to Fourline, HOWEVER, there is an instance that the author describes her as suddenly clumsy and knocking into things when she is near a certain man, which is very irritating! It's as though she suddenly becomes incompetent when she's near the guy she likes and that doesn't mesh with the character she had been thus far. I was also really frustrated with the constant blame that is placed on her and the guilt she feels, when it wasn't her fault she didn't have all the facts when she was in Fourline previously. I hope the author doesn't let that go in the finale. Narration was fine, I'm not overly in love with the different voices created by the narrator and I really don't like the little girl voice she gives Natalie, but the flow is well done. Overall, this is a great second story in the trilogy, deepning the mysteries of Fourline and letting us get to know the characters even more.Looking forward to the third!
