Publisher's Summary

While on a brief leave home from the deadly skies of World War II, a decorated German flying ace must decide between conscience and country when his courageous fiancé reveals her potentially deadly secret she's been keeping right under the nose of the SS.

She wondered if he was the man she was searching for. How many men after all could have that name, and be both a retired musician and a former Luftwaffe ace? She had so many unanswered questions. How would he explain the violence, the many deaths by his own hand? How had he survived when so many of his comrades perished under the guns of the Allied air armadas? And most important, had this man somehow found redemption? Or was he just another grizzled old Nazi living out his last days in undeserved anonymity, still unrepentant for the horrors his people inflicted upon the world, and her people in particular?

Rachael Azerod, a New York reporter, flies to London to interview Harmon Becker, the former German WW II hero whom Hitler himself awarded the highest honors - but she has her own reasons for meeting. Was he just a soldier? Or did he do something so astounding that not even he was willing to remember it…until now?

Of Another Time and Place is a novel about love, redemption, and two young lovers separated by war and desperate to survive the unparalleled violence consuming their war-torn nation. It is the story of a country gone astray, mesmerized by their mad Fuehrer, and the artist-turned-warrior and his courageous bride who vow to break his spell and make a difference, even it if means dangling at end of a Nazi rope.

A worthy addition to the pantheon of beloved war novels from A Farewell to Arms to All Quiet on the Western Front, Brad Schaeffer’s gripping story draws the listener into the very heart of the conflagration that was the Second World War. He takes the listener deep into the conflicts that raged not only in the skies over Germany, but within the hearts of combatants and non-combatants alike who found themselves trying to maintain their humanity when all decency seemed to have abandoned the happy lives they once knew.

Really enjoyed this one!

I read a lot of non-fiction as well as fictional war stories/books and this title kept popping up in recommendations but when I saw it was an "Audible Escape" I kept passing it over. I can't stand sappy romances with thin, watery plots and I feared this would be one of them. After seeing good reviews on Audible as well as other sites I finally decided to give it a try and so glad I did! Yes, there is a love interest between the two main characters but there's not a lot of sap flowing and there's no torrid trash. There is a lot of action though with good descriptions of aerial combat which is very well written. The plot was good but I did find it to be a bit predictable. I think the thing that turned this above average plot into an exceptional listen for me was the narrator. He did an excellent job with the characters' different voices/accents/inflections. Narrator really helped bring each character to life and develop their unique personalities which helped me to better connect with them. He reads with so much emotion that you can actually feel the horror, stress, compassion, happiness, rage, sorrow and fear the characters are experiencing. He is one of the best I've heard. The story moved along quickly and for me it didn't lag anywhere. It was an easy listen without a lot of complicated side plots going on yet it was engrossing and entertaining and a reminder that there were good people on both sides of a bad war. You won't be sorry you used a credit on this one.

Living inside me....

This book, these characters, the story will be living inside me for a long, long time.

I started this book, thinking it was similar to many other WWII stories -- bad Nazi's, good Allies. This story is so much more than good vs. evil. I've often thought about how an entire country, Germany, can turn against their own neighbors, friends, and countrymen -- the Jewish people. As the story is told, one begins to understand that we are all human and much more alike than different....a refreshing and horrifying thought. By the end of the story, one can see how one person can impact many--like Hitler and how one person can impact many -- like Becker. Throughout the story, I found myself looking at our own time and finding far too many similarities. I've always thought we would never have another situation like the one we had in WWII -- that we had learned our lesson, sadly, I think we learned the lesson both ways -- that it never should happen again, and that it could.

Brad Schaeffer's writing is outstanding. The narration is superb. The story is gripping and holds your heart until the end. I had tears running down my cheeks at the end of the story. Because this story will live inside me, for a long time, it will never be far away, and I can feel the story, the characters, and the lessons whenever I need a reminder that humanity is so very real and so very fragile.

WOW this should be made into movie

5 stars don’t begin to express my love of this book. It keep me fully engaged and on edge of my chair so many times. Never had a book from Nazi pilot point of view So sad it had to end. Hard to truly express how very good it was. Was it the story or author or narrator but all three made it one of best books I’ve ever read. Wish there were more books out there. That came even close to this . You will not e sorry to spend a credit I would love to see this played out in movie theater

Excellent narration. Great story.

I cannot believe this audiobook has not been downloaded more. The reviews were some of the highest I had seen on Audible and I was curious if they were worth it. Well, I am happy to report, I concur, the 4.8 stars are merited!! I thought the narration was amazing. The story was intriguing and that various angles of how war impacts folks was represented, depending on the role they have to play....but after the misery of war wages and the losses add up, participants from both sides start to see the senselessness of war. The only thing I would offer to give the story my 5th star was there was just one too many coincidences/close calls for me at the end of the War years and there could have been more conflict/resolution or character development with the present day characters.

Excellent

I almost did not continue after the opening chapter... i expected it to be a mean story about a mean man - but it is excellent. The War was mean as was Hitler and many who fought for him . this story can't avoid that when talking about a German Ace Pilot, but it mostly shows a human side as well. I really liked this story!

A World War Two story like no other

The novel is told in the first person, by a German pilot who is looking back on his long life. Everything is there: friendship, love, family, suspense, the evilness of war. But also the social issues that allowed Hitler to come to power, the education that went into creating citizens that could not see truth and logic through their adoration of a power crazy man. Comparing then and now gave me goosebumps.

Wonderful!

It was nice to learn the side of the enemy. We hear of our wars through Allied views but seldom through the enemies. I love how he saved a Jewish family. So much death and destruction along with unconditional love
