Resumen del Editor

Drums along the Mohawk, Walter D. Edmonds' masterpiece, is not only the best historical novel about upstate New York since James Fenimore Cooper, it was also number one on the bestseller list for two years, only yielding to the epic Gone with the Wind.

This is the story of the forgotten pioneers of the Mohawk Valley during the Revolutionary War. Here Gilbert Martin and his young wife struggled and lived and hoped. Combating hardships almost too great to endure, they helped give to America a legend that still stirs the heart. In the midst of love and hate, life and death, danger and disaster, they stuck to the acres that were theirs and fought a war without ever quite understanding it. Drums along the Mohawk has been an American classic since its original publication in 1936.

Revolutionary War Soap Opera

As historical fiction goes, this novel remains true to the genre, relying on first person accounts of upstate New York's tribulations from British-backed raiders during the Revolutionary War. As adventure reading goes, this novel is a dull. Just when it seems like the author is going to delve into the details of skirmishes, he shifts our attention away to the fear and anguish of those whom observe the conflict from a distance (pregnant wives, old men and women, and those sheltering in the local fort). It all makes for too much third person accounting of battles and strife. I, personally, never felt the experiences of the combatants through first-hand accounting (fictional or otherwise) with enough detail to make it real.

I rate this audiobook two tomahawks down.

Drums Along the Mohawk

Boring! I couldn't even imagine any of the scenes. Don't know the area, so couldn't
figure out where everything was. Just found it to be boring! Enjoyed listening to the reader.

Drums of the Mohawk

The reality of the revolution war for the average person that lived in the bush. The story was sound and kept me interested.

Boring and repetitive

I got this book because I have been doing family ancestry research and found out that ancestors settled Schenectady and the Mohawk Valley. this book did a good job of portraying a time and place in history. As far as I can tell it is historically accurate.

The book is clearly sexist and racist. Every Native American is drunk and murderous. Every woman, with the exception of one, is easily overwhelmed and unable to take care of herself. Throw in whiny and you've got a poor picture of womanhood. I know the book was written in the 1930s and maybe that is just a reflection of its time and place.

I am not crazy about listening rather than reading but I have to do something on my long commute. I find the narrator gets in the way. I am bothered when a male narrator tries to imitate a woman's voice. She winds up sounding fake. The same is true of a woman narrating mens' voices. Maybe each Audible book needs both a male and female reader. Each could read all characters of their own gender, a bit more like a radio play. I have learned I prefer narrated nonfiction.

Better than the movie!<br />

Way, way better than the movie! Much more detail. More sub-stories.Better character development. The movie is pathetic in comparison.

Wonderful Historical Novel!

Very informative and educational while entertaining. Characters very believable. Many admirable, decent men and women - whites, Indians, blacks, as well as villains and the weak. This book very accurate about speech and viewpoints of that generation.

Mrs. DuBooth harmful mistress who crushed her servant, Nancy. So glad Nancy found a good husband.

Happy for the other couples such as Gil and Lana, who survived, had children, and farmed.

Simple, hard lifestyle very interesting. Perseverance of these people admirable.

This book, written in 1936, must have been scandalous at the time due to the frank portrayal of sex, done in a very realistic way, not prurient but showing motivation of people.

Narrator not the best (Nancy's voice and the black accent could have been improved), but good enough not to detract from the awesome story.

I am going to listen to this several more times.

Loved it! Narrator was good. I wished John had lived to see his and Mary's baby.

Dated writing

The book was interesting to me only because it offered a view of rural life during the American Revolution, far from the battles and other notable events of the time. The story is slow, so slow that it was easy to lose focus. Overall fine, but I doubt I’ll ever listen to it again
