Story
My name is Hope Arden, and you won't know who I am. But we've met before—a thousand times. It started when I was 16 years old. A father forgetting to drive me to school. A mother setting the table for three, not four. A friend who looks at me and sees a stranger. No matter what I do, the words I say, the crimes I commit, you will never remember who I am. That makes my life difficult. It also makes me dangerous. The Sudden Appearance of Hope is a riveting and heartbreaking exploration of identity and existence, about a forgotten girl whose story will stay with you forever.

Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Story
Touch is an electrifying thriller by the author of The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August and 84K. He tried to take my life. Instead, I took his. It was a long time ago. I remember it was dark, and I didn't see my killer until it was too late. As I died, my hand touched his. That's when the first switch took place. Suddenly, I was looking through the eyes of my killer, and I was watching myself die. Now switching is easy. I can jump from body to body, have any life, be anyone. Some people touch lives. Others take them. I do both.

Winner of the 1973 National Book Award, Gravity's Rainbow is a postmodern epic, a work as exhaustively significant to the second half of the 20th century as Joyce's Ulysses was to the first. Its sprawling, encyclopedic narrative and penetrating analysis of the impact of technology on society make it an intellectual tour de force.

Publisher's Summary
An NPR Best Book of 2021
A Washington Post Best Book of 2021
“A riveting tale of subterfuge and deadly self-indulgence” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) from award-winning author Claire North, Notes from the Burning Age presents an extraordinary vision of the future that puts dystopian fiction in a whole new light.
Ven was once a holy man, a keeper of ancient archives. It was his duty to interpret archaic texts, sorting useful knowledge from the heretical ideas of the Burning Age - a time of excess and climate disaster. For in Ven's world, such material must be closely guarded so that the ills that led to that cataclysmic era can never be repeated.
But when the revolutionary Brotherhood approaches Ven, pressuring him to translate stolen writings that threaten everything he once held dear, his life will be turned upside down. Torn between friendship and faith, Ven must decide how far he's willing to go to save this new world - and how much he is willing to lose.

fantastic
Heavy on world building and definitely a slow build, but the climax pays off and Claire North once again delivers a book that centers around an enmity that is, ultimately, a friendship verging on brotherhood. She is one of the masters of modern science fiction, and will go down in literary history standing alongside such greats as Asimov and Scalzi. Her take on the post-apocalyptic world is unique and fascinating, and as usual the great events of the world ultimately form the backdrop for the entirely human and personal story of the main character.

Difficult but worth it
I wished there were a written list of characters. I had a problem keeping them straight. The rhythm of the prose is exquisite. The narration perfect. This would not have been an easy book to narrate. As mentioned. this is a slow build but so very worth it. I almost gave up but like a roller coaster, once the climb was achieved, the book was breathtaking and I couldn't put it down. The relationship between the two main characters kept me listening during those times I was tempted to give up. I will be thinking of Ven and Georg for a long time to come.

Not her best work
Far from the top of her catalog. A large divert from the style we’ve grown to know and love. Her world building is weak. This comes from a big fan of her North/Webb’s usually work. I miss the “just to the left of everyday” that stirs the imagination. The story was as convoluted and hard to follow as the world of the story was.

Horrible narration
The narrator reads like he doesn't understand the words he says. He uses the same tone and cadence for every sentence regardless of context, they might as well use text to speech.
I didn't finish this. The book might be fine as far as I know, but if you want to read it skip this version.

Another unique & original story from Ms North
Yet another great story well worth your time. Instead of writing about something mythical, North takes today's reality and writes a dystopian future of what could happen. She makes the bleak future fascinating and also not unrealistic. Without tangible evidence I did guess correctly who Pontis was, mainly as it felt like the most obvious and also tragic choice.

A Slow Burn
A great listen!
I’ve never read this author before but I thought I’d pick it up on a whim.
The author drops the reader into the deep end of a dystopian future. I think this is where a lot of readers may find it a tougher slog. Stay with it, enjoy the writing, the plot line reveals itself in due coarse. It’s well worth the effort.
This book is a Slow Burn that just gets better and better.

On the isle of Ithaca, queen Penelope maintains a delicate balance of power. Many years ago, her husband Odysseus sailed to war with Troy and never came home. In his absence, Penelope uses all her cunning to keep the peace—a peace that is shattered by the return of Orestes, King of Mycenae, and his sister Elektra. Orestes' hands are stained with his mother's blood. Not so long ago, the son of Agamemnon took Queen Clytemnestra's life on Ithaca's sands. Now, wracked with guilt, he is slowly losing his mind. But a king cannot be seen to be weak.

I do both.

Story
You define life or it defines you. In Shawn Speakman’s case, it was both. Lacking health insurance and diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2011, Shawn quickly accrued a massive medical debt that he did not have the ability to pay. That’s when New York Times best-selling author Terry Brooks offered to donate a short story that Shawn could sell to help alleviate those bills—and suggested he ask the same of his other writer friends. Unfettered is the result: An anthology built in order to relieve that debt, featuring short stories by some of the best fantasy writers in the genre.
