Publisher's summary

When the dangerous men who killed her husband in a political assassination threaten Ara, Duchess of Burghly, the Crown assigns her a bodyguard. But the man charged with protecting her is no stranger.

He’s Clayton Ludlow, the bastard son of a duke and the first man she ever loved. Eight years after he took her innocence and ruthlessly abandoned her, he’s back in her drawing room and her life.

This time, she’s older, wiser, and stronger. She will resist him at any cost and make him pay for the past.

She’s the only woman Clay ever loved and the one he hates above all others. When Ara brutally betrayed and deceived him, leaving him with a scarred face and a bitter heart, he devoted himself to earning his reputation as one of the Crown’s most feared agents.

He wants nothing more than to finish his assignment so that he can remove all traces of her from his life forever. But walking away from her for good won’t be as easy as he thinks.

As secrets are revealed and danger threatens Ara, Clay discovers that the truth is far more complicated than deceit. Once she’s back in his arms where she belongs, he’ll wage the biggest fight of all to keep her there.

Needs a ruthless editor. Lots of redundancy.

There are 3-7 sentences of inner musings for every sentence of dialogue. At this ratio, I often forgot what the characters were discussing. Too bad, since all that extra stuff diminishes what is at its heart a great book. Not even the considerable talents of Rosalyn Landor can make up for the overgrown prose of this one. Could comfortably be boiled down to an excellent 4 hour listen.

Very repetitive

Could have been a good story but way too much repetitive jabber. Not even the great Rosalyn Landor can save it. Sad since there was a good sub story with the Irish terrorists plot, but it was underused. The Irish plot could have been a way to flesh out the story so it would not have needed to keep repeating how each H/H hated the other and had been betrayed. I got that in the first few chapters. Also WAY TOO MUCH inner thoughts. The characters were constantly being told they were distracted. Not horrible but glad it was part of the romance package so I didn't need a refund.

Love Rosalyn Landor!

She is the only reason I was able to stick with this book. I saw another review that said it needed a good Editor and another that said it was too repetitive. They were both right. It reads like the author had a contract that requires that the book be a specific number of words or pages and she was a chapter short. The same inner dialogues by the same two characters, over and over, explaining why they held on to being angry with each other for literally half of the book. This could honestly have been condensed into a novella easily with proper editing. Otherwise it was enjoyable.

Captivating

Although I absolutely loved the story, I was already hooked when I saw who the narrator was.

Too much repetition

Could not finish due to the constant repetition of the same conflict between the characters. Love Rosalyn Landor though!

It’s too repetitive

Great story line got lost in the repetition of hatred misunderstandings of both the main characters. Could have been half as long. Can’t decide if I’ll get any of the rest of the series even though I think the author has potential for good storytelling.

Mediocre

Repeating information already disclosed to readers. Too much sexual content. The sex scenes became boring. Sex is spicy but too many episodes slows down the plot. There were too few plot points . I was disappointed by this one. I prefer to praise a book. This book was thrown together. Hiring the best narrator could not save it.

A good listen

My first Scarlett Scott book. Pretty good, I'll probably listen to more by her. Rosalyn Landor is one of my favorites and she did a nice job.

Tedious

This is an eye roller. The characters drone on and in perpetuity in a love hate relationship. Fast forwarded a lot. Glad when it was over.

Good Start

I couldn't get into this book at first and maybe it was me at the start. However, the more I listened, the more I enjoyed it. This love story had some road blocks and in the process, lives were affected. Along the way you learn what happens and it is a nice and steamy story. Rosalyn Landor is very good.
