Publisher's summary

Fire crawls up the sides of the church. The orange glow thrashes. Blackens the siding. Climbs up onto the steeple. The flames close in on the wedding party trapped inside.

When a serial arsonist terrorizes Los Angeles county, FBI profiler Violet Darger heads over to California to investigate. The fires keep coming faster. The body count rises, and the threat hangs over the city as thick as the smog.

The case file is brutal - stuffed with photographs of charred bodies, human faces melted beyond recognition. And when Darger gets up close to the crimes - the real thing - that sense of savagery only intensifies.

What kind of a person could carry out such cruelties? Understanding the warped psychology will be the key to solving the case.

The suspect seems hellbent on creating a spectacle. Bigger targets. More deaths. He treats setting fires like a Hollywood special effects sequence, like he's building up to the shocking finale.

Watch the city burn. It's entertainment.

And there's one more factor complicating the investigation: Autumn is settling in over Southern California. The leaves are changing color, and the Santa Ana winds have begun to change directions. The Hollywood Hills are ripe for a forest fire. The arsonist means to make it the biggest one yet.

A pause-resister packed with heart-stopping suspense. Fans of John Sandford, Michael Connelly, Lisa Regan, and Lisa Gardner should check out the Violet Darger series.

The Violet Darger series book 6

I liked the other books in the series better, but still very good. Kate performance was great. Going to take a short break and then on to book 7…..

Completely Believable...

This is another really good series. If you like procedurals featuring the FBI then I would suggest giving this series a try. This is book six. Each book can be listened to as a stand alone. There are some continuing relationships but the full background isn’t necessary as it really doesn’t affect the story.
This book has believable characters and a plausible storyline. The antagonist is an arsonist lighting fires more and more dangerous. The protagonist (Violet Darger) is a profiler. The story is told from multiple points of view. There are a few red herrings with an ending you won’t see coming.
Kate Marcin does an excellent job narrating.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The best of the Violet Darger stories.

This episode of the Violet Darger stories not only finds Violet back as an FBI Profiler, but working solo on an arson case in California. I was mesmerized with this story, much like watching a very disturbing event/movie that you can’t pull away from for fear of missing something. Having read all the previous Violet Darger stories, I can say without reservation this is the best of the lot, and considering all the earlier stories are awesome, this one delivered with the awesome narration skills of Kate Marcin grabs you from the start and holds you until the various parts are resolved.

AMAZING as usual!!!

I didn't expect anything less of course, but this one was a surprise! Left me wondering who until we were told! :)
Then we were left on a cliffhanger...
Can't wait for #7!!!

Another good story

A good read, Darger remains indestructible as always. A really good point of view on a different kind of killer.

inside the mind of a killer

I am a total true crime nerd and a huge fan of these authors. They do a great job of writing thrillers that read almost exactly like real cases, because they are able to get inside the minds of the victims, the killers, and also the people trying to solve the cases in a totally believable way. This series is for anybody who is a fan of true crime, and especially for those who are interested in the psychological aspects of these kinds of cases. I also really appreciate how these authors provide societal context for their stories. they are very good at telling stories in the context of real life, and showing how nothing ever happens without it being caused by or affecting other people and situations.

There is one part of this book that really bothered me. It's a very realistic depiction of a killing that is extremely disturbing. It made me angry. But that's how real their stories are. The reality of these crimes can be upsetting, even though it's fiction. But that's why I love these authors! They know how to tell a story.

SEMI-SPOILER ALEET....Pretty Good read

I have enjoyed this series. This particular story didn't involve Violet going off doing exactly what she's not supposed to and getting someone killed which I was thankful for.

HOWEVER, Violet needs a man to ground her. Someone strong whose not afraid of her personality. She had that in the last book, but she managed to mess that up Luck would be an ok person since he understands her job. He's just not as strong as I think she woukd need. The sleeping with this one, getting rid of that one, and basically being a spoiled brat is getting g old.

I have come to expect someone dying, Violet catching feelings and sleeping with someone shes working with and always catching the bad guy/girl so to speak. Although this isn't a true story, it would be nice to be completely surprised. Like the bad guy gets away and leave us readers/listeners with a cliff hanger until the next book. As I got closer to the end of this book I thought it might end that way, but nope.... it didn't. .... disappointing.

The narrator was awesome. I truly enjoyed listening to her and she did well changing her voice to fit a particular character.

Storyline was much different then the previous books in this series, which I appreciated.

Advice.... Start with book 1. There's things that are said in the book and previous characters in the book that you need to know and understand the history Violet has with them. Is it the most important.....no. But it will help you understand... and understanding is important. Enjoy.

Another great read

I absolutely love Darger. She’s always up for the task. I love how she inspires other police officers.
