Publisher's Summary

On September 1, 1939, the Germans invaded Poland, setting off a rising storm of violence and destruction. This was the start of World War Two. For Anna and Jan Kopernik, the loss is unimaginable. Anna's father is deported to a death camp, and Anna must flee to Belgium where she joins the Resistance.

Meanwhile, Jan escapes with the battered remnants of the Polish army to Britain. When British intelligence asks him to return to Poland on an underground mission to contact the Resistance, Jan seizes the chance to search for his missing wife.

A great listen

I really enjoyed this audible book. I was not familiar with all the partisan resistance in Belgium. At first listen I disliked Ian fishers narration. Too abrupt or rough just something I didn’t like. But he grew on me and I can’t imagine anybody else narrating a book I ended up loving him. The dedication of people to their homeland was so Important in winning the war. The Americans British Polish Belgium during this time in history were truly the greatest generation

Almost a Great book

I enjoyed this book but the narrator certainly wouldn't be one of my favourites, his accents where way off the mark. That said, the story was good enough to easily forget sme of the vocal irritations.

I was surprised that the story line jumped 4 years, from 1939 to 1943, and at first i diddn't like the idea, there was little mention of the intervening years. However the storyline picked up again and kept me interested right until the end.

If youre interested in war time stories involving the resistance and exploits of the SOE, this is definately worth downloading.

Overall performance

I really enjoyed the story line but the narration I felt was very poor. The voices of the characters did not come across well, they were in distinct and not nearly sharp enough to be convincing

must read novel

A great book and well narrated. the story line will keep you glued to this novel . A story of 2 married people separate even before the war started and their separation each fighting the Germans in their own way. each hoping the other was still alive
