Publisher's Summary

Cole Balek is a liar.

Okay, not really. He just makes you think he’s sawing someone in half or that he’s trapped in a trunk. All Cole wants is to continue the love of magic that he and his late father shared by becoming the best tween magician in the Las Vegas area.

But when Cole and his mother get a mysterious note from a rare book collector, he’s forced to search among his father’s belongings for A Lesson in Magick, an old book of spells connected to an ancient group of magickers. What he finds instead are a series of coded clues his dad left for him - clues that send Cole and his best friends Ethan and Sanchez on a wild scavenger hunt throughout Las Vegas, in search of A Lesson in Magick. Cole must use every hack and magic trick he’s got, because he knows that if the book falls into the wrong hands, disaster will strike.

As danger mounts, who can this clever, funny, and determined group of friends really trust in a world filled with professional magicians, strange professors, and scary Elvis impersonators?

Fantastic Mystery/Adventure!

Ok, so Josh Gad is the PERFECT voice for this part. No, he doesn't sound 12, but his inflections and overall read will absolutely get you in that headspace. The story is wild and funny, like a quest but leaving you wondering who is a good guy and who is a bad guy and who is somewhere in the middle. The supporting cast are also great--I'd love a standalone Sanchez story! Great fun for kids and families.

Classy, fun adventure w/o smut

This was a lot of fun. I loved the intellectual and adventurous tone. The story is mainly about three friends, 2 male, 1 female who solve a mystery and evade numerous villains including "Smellvis". Take note Audible, this proves you dont need the extreme smut & alternative sexual scenes for an interesting story that is engaging for all ages. For example, there is a part about Dolly Parton impersonators who are described with big blonde hair and glitter rather than other body parts kids dont need to focus on. I also like there is a family focus, the bonds are obvious, poignant but not sappy. Much appreciated, bravo!

Decent

Great read for children and teens. A little too predictable for adults. Narrator was great.

Great story! Great narration!

This is a great story. My kids, 7 year old girl and 12 year old boy, BOTH loved it. They recognized and enjoyed the voices of Josh Gad, you forget it’s only 1 person reading. We are about to listen to it again. Thank you Audible and Josh Gad!

Great young adult book.

Really works well in capturing how young adults think and process the world around them. Both rightly and wrongly.
The narrator did a perfect job. Josh made those characters come to life, adults and the young teens.

Maybe it’s only for tigers

The plot twists are predictable but that never prevents me to like a book for kids. The banter between the characters is sometimes funny, but usually distracting from the story. I couldn’t follow the riddles and the solutions felt forced to me, as if they could have any other answer. I’m frustrated because it looks like it gave a lot of work to the author to write all this stuff and it was a great theme but it doesn’t “glue” together all that well.
I suppose I’m too old to think this is redeemable

Predictable

This story was trite and predictable. It alternated between moments of action and suspense and slow-moving dialogue. I found it boring. My sons, ages 10-15, likes it slightly more, but none of us loved it.

The incredible Josh Gad!

I was unfamiliar with this author, but when I saw Josh Gad narrated it (Olaf from Frozen and LeFou from Beauty and the Beast), I knew I had to try it. Plus, I like teen dramas. Not only is this a very engaging story, but Josh did such a great job narrating it, I had to check to see if there was a co-narrator. Nope, he does all the voices! I will for sure buy the next book if the author writes a follow up!

More please!

I was a fan of Josh Gad before this, having just listened to him perform André the Giants Fezzik in the WisDems fundraiser to perfection. So when I discovered what looked to be a lighthearted magical adventure I decided it was worth the risk. And was I ever right! It was well written and fast paced. Fun for all ages. Highly recommended. Now we need more of these adventure written by Suri Rosen and narrated by Josh Gad, of course!!

This is a magical adventure I’ll never forget!

Suri Rosen knows how’s to tell a story! I loved the wonderful, vivid imagery that jumps out at the reader/listener! Josh Gad was the perfect narrator for this tale! I had so much fun listening to this beautiful story of a boy’s undying love for his lost father.
