Publisher's Summary

Laugh till you cry in this new collection of stories from the “Serena Williams of humor writing” (New York Times Book Review) about raising babies and trying to learn how not to be one.

Called a “comedic Godsend” by Conan O’Brien, and “the Stephen King of comedy writing” by John Mulaney, Simon Rich is back with New Teeth, his funniest and most personal collection yet.

Two murderous pirates find a child stowaway on board and attempt to balance pillaging with co-parenting. A woman raised by wolves prepares for her parents’ annual Thanksgiving visit. An aging mutant superhero is forced to learn humility when the mayor kicks him upstairs to a desk job. And in the hard-boiled caper “The Big Nap”, a weary two-year-old detective struggles to make sense of “a world gone mad”.

Equal parts silly and sincere, New Teeth is an ode to growing up, growing older, and what it means to make a family.

Critic Reviews

"Rich presents parody, absurdity, observational wit, the sudden shift in a familiar premise, and a surprising touch of sweetness and charm throughout.... [New Teeth is] so consistently funny, so exceptional in its imaginative use of parody as to be near genius. A fertile mind provides many smiles in this entertaining collection - and more than a few out-loud laughs." Kind of like an SNL skit...starts out funny then..

This is a compilation of fictional stories that takes an absurdist spin on familiar tropes. Each chapter is a different story where the narrator becomes the character of which the story is about. The first half of the book is very funny and charming in how each story starts in a familiar setting and then takes a left turn. The fun of the book is that in the first few stories you don't see the left turns coming. But by the time you get toward the back half, the surprise is gone and the book starts to become a one trick pony. The surprise twists aren't as much of a surprise anymore and I found myself just waiting for it to end.

Uneven

Hot and cold…the shorter chapters/vignettes hit the strike zone with more regularity whereas the longer stories almost became a bit tedious and indulgent…like Simon lost his way. I ended a couple with the reaction “well, there’s 30 min of my life I’ll never get back”. Hard to enthusiastically recommend even though there are some true diamonds included. Good but not great.

Painfully unamusing

As I finished each story I kept telling myself that they had to get better. I was wrong. Nothing even slightly humorous. I am amazed that anyone would give this collection two stars much less five.

Funniest book I’ve ever read

Heard about it on the Conan podcast, I mostly read non-fiction but I enjoy a humorous Terry Pratchet story here and there, this book is the funniest thing I’ve ever read or listened to.

I almost woke up my daughters with my laughter, ended up binging the whole thing in one sitting.

There’s a perfect balance of gut busting comedy and heartfelt emotion, I found myself choking up with almost every single story in between all the laughter.

Is this the perfect book? It’s hard to say, but yes.

It might very well be my new favorite book, I’m leaving behind hobbits and dragons and embracing co-parenting pirates instead.

Hilarious, Heartwarming and Heartbreaking

Fantastic set of short stories, must listen for any parent or future parent. I could not stop laughing then crying then laughing again at every story. So stupid and silly but also so heavy and thought provoking.

Performance by the reader was also really great and could have ruined the stories if he did not understand the beats, which I think he did a great job of hitting.

Comedy is a serious business.

A collection of short stories, NEW TEETH ranges from bittersweet to damn!! Each chapter asks the question, "What If?"
Sometimes poignant, "Raised by wolves," to sketch material, "Tips for Parenting", and "Clobbo." Simon Rich has the skill to deliver.

Perfect 1-2 Combo

The stories are funny and Fred Berman's delivery is fantastic. The nice thing about these stories is that even though they are funny they're also very heartwarming.

Wonderfully quirky

Fun collection of short stories each with its own twist. Has a great ability to slip in laugh out loud non sequiturs within all of the different stories. Highly recommend if you like humorous plays of writing genres and themes.

The best short stories book I've ever read!

This is hands down the best book of short stories I've ever read.

It's "laughing out loud" funny and the voice actor is so good that I'm researching if he is reading other books, the moment that I'm finished writing this review, but the BEST thing about this book is the author's unbelievable imagination! Inspirational👍
