Publisher's Summary

She’d do anything for her boy....

Vanessa Sawyer knows all about pain. She’s felt it every day since marrying the boy who fathered her baby in high school. All he’s meant are broken bones, broken heart and broken dreams. But he also brought her the love of her life. When her son, Wren, was born, her baby boy was her salvation.

Vanessa watches Wren grow and become a young man she can be proud of. Until one night everything changes, including Wren. One night that her son refuses to speak of. Now, Vanessa can’t rest, not until she uncovers the secret that her son has been hiding from her.

Will she find the answers she’s searching for, or will her quest for the truth take her to a dark place where all hope is lost?

One evil act. One tragedy. Lives destroyed forever.

Heart-pounding and unforgettable, Kirsty Ferguson has written the perfect novel for all fans of B. A. Paris and Adele Parks.

No…Just No

I didn’t pay anything for this book, and somehow I still want my money back! Please just take my word for it, and skip it.

Horrible main character; childish writing

SPOILERS

The main character is abysmally stupid and takes no responsibility for what she does to her own child. She is portrayed as oblivious to the possibility that having a small child feel the need to play the role of her protector from his abusive father is a bad position to put him in. She has this young boy apply medicines to bruises and wounds after an attack. It's such a normal thing, that he walks out to her with the ointment in hand after every attack. He has to comfort her time and time again instead of her protecting him. She keeps him in the house when she knows the father is angry and ready to explode - sensing it may be one of the times when it's so bad he may try to kill her - but at least she reminds the child of the escape plan they've practiced. He can run down the road to his grandparents' house. They're that nearby! She could have sent him there at any point because - as she repeats a million times - the father has no interest in the boy whatsoever and wouldn't even notice or care that he was gone, But no, apparently she thinks it's okay to keep him there just in case good ol' Dad only wants to break her nose and ribs again. Then - this is so incredibly ridiculous - she has this 9 or 10 year old boy act as her labor coach, telling her to breathe, holding her hand and feeding her ice chips - over a 9+ hour labor. It just goes on and on. But gee...you're pretty sure all won't be well because of the many, many, many times she says what a sweet and caring child/teen/young man he has become. Cue the scary, portentous music. When she worries about the damage her husband may have done to him (and of course there will be scars from that; he's horrendous), she simultaneously pats herself on the back for how wonderfully her "best friend" has grown up. Of course her relationship with her husband is horrific and nothing excuses that but putting a child in the role of protector, husband stand-in, best friend and confidant practically from birth...just NO! I loathe this character.

Just Awful!

Horrendously written, pointless storyline, unrealistic plot. And someone please get the narrator a drink of water for her dry mouth.

Painful listen, but I finished because I bought the book…

This book is full of so many stereotypes and cliches. Not allowing the main character to learn from past mistakes of others and remain the victim was very frustrating. Her parents don’t help her or encourage her to get away. The lack of character depth was disappointing.
I have not researched where the author is from, but there is quite a bit of British terminology. And while I love United Kingdom set novels, they usually have a British or Irish accented narrator. This was obviously an American accented narrator.
Just a very frustrating read.

Not believable

Badly written. What a mess. Ridiculous situations. Amateurish dialog. and writing. Lots of the f word for no reason. Stupid ending. Everything in the book irritated me. Like a soap opera.

Bad production

The story isn’t bad but I could not stand the narrator. Or maybe it’s the producer. You can hear the reader smacking her lips together and swallowing. Completely takes you out of the story. A good editor does a world of difference.

Let’s that happen to their daughter for 8 years. What mother allows her son to see that abuse for 8 years ! Awful regardless of the outcome.

Amateurish

I finally gave up on this book after about an hour of listening. The author has no understanding of human nature. The characters are not developed well, and no reasonable motivation is shown for their actions. The main character is regularly beaten up and then just goes about her business. I don't know how the narrator could force herself to read this book. Such drivel!!

If Lifetime and Hallmark had a book baby…

… it would be this boring, predictable story.

This book is objectively awful. It’s badly written and amateurish. It’s grammatically incorrect and the characters are flat. This is so bad.

Waste of time

Really struggled with this book. The main charachter Vanessa was a really horrendous human being and her solving of the mystery was farcical to say the least. Really crappy ending too.

Awful ending and annoying narrator

Firstly - I had to play white noise in the background just to block out the annoying mouth noises from the narrator. Constantly being able to hear saliva in the mouth does not make for good listening.
Secondly - Absolutely awful ending!

One of those books you wish to forget you ever waisted your time listening to

What a dreadful story in every way. Badly written, poor use of language, abuse of swearing totally out of context and the most irritating sound of the reader’s dehydrated mouth. I just kept I listening with the futile hope that something would improve but it just kept on getting worse.

Ignore negative reviews

I absolutely loved this audio book. It held my attention from start to finish and I didn’t want it to finish. I can’t understand the negative comments, it was well written, well read and had a brilliant twist at the end. Give it a try.

Great story

this story is one of revelation and heartbreak . there are also redeeming moments in it the realisation and acceptance of what is rather than what one might like it to be the hard truth, the facing up to reality . I was hooked quite early on.

Depressing

Couldn’t wait for the book to end. Dreadful story, unrealistic, poor finish and a waste of my time to listen to it. It was so depressing. I rarely submit a full review but this was terrible and I don’t want others to feel cheated. Don’t do it- listen to something else!!

Excessively depressing story with poor characters

A book centered around the constant raping and bashing of women. Nothing like it's description, it is not exciting or thrilling, it is just sad. Do not read this if the above topics upset you.

Teenage drama

Only got half way thru. The fairytale teenage world of what relationships should be like in the narrator's sing song voice just didn't make sense in a book about domestic violence & rape.
The acceptance of the DV by the 'loving mother' was really unforgiving. Who does that? ie watches on whilst their daughter get's repeatedly beaten but being 'loving' & 'caring' in a sweet maternal voice?
Def not for me & if it is in fact pitched to a teenage audience, I would be v worried about what it teaches a teen is normal behaviour.

Trigger warning. Sense of domestic violence and rape

This was an emotional roller coaster of a book. It’s well written, the characters are complex but believable. Finished in one day.

I didn’t like the bubbly narration, it didn’t match the context
