Story
After narrowly surviving my debut into the magical world, I made a promise to myself: no more hiding in broom closets. But with the Mages' Guild reorganizing faster than anyone thought possible, and naming me as their number one target, that promise seems a little far-fetched. Especially since my training with Callie and Dizzy, the highly experienced dual-mage pair, goes off like a cake in a cannon. Left to find someone that can fill the role, it isn't until a formal dinner party goes horribly wrong that I find the best (and worst) solution imaginable: Reagan Somerset, the leather-clad crazy woman who busted into my broom closet sanctuary in the first place.

Some people are ordained for greatness. Those people usually have a lot of drama in their life. Drama I happily do without. I live in a forgotten corner of nowhere for a reason: there is safety in anonymity. I have enough problems just trying to get by. But when Kieran, a sinfully sexy demigod at the pinnacle of power, crashes into my life, suddenly my whole world is turned upside down. He’s harboring a deadly secret, one that could destroy all he holds dear. He thinks I’m the key to his salvation, and he wants me to help him claim vengeance. He also wants me with a passion.

Publisher's Summary
The explosive new addition to the DDVN World (Fire and Ice series) by USA Today best-selling author K. F. Breene!
Something has always been missing from my life. A hole that I could never seem to fill.
When I accidentally turn a coven of witches into nightmares, I find out what that something is.
Magic.
And it turns out, I have a crap load of it.
As a latent power awakens deep inside of me, I'm exposed to one of the most powerful and corrupt organizations in the magical world - the Mages' Guild.
Barely knowing a spell from a few swear words and luck, I won't be able to evade them alone.
And that's when I meet him.
The Rogue Natural. The best and most feared mage in the world.
He's dangerous, mysterious, and has a vendetta of his own. He is now the only thing between me and magical enslavement.

Breene never fails to deliver!
Great story! If you are a fan of the Fire & Ice trilogy you will be happy to see Reagen and team as side characters in this book! This is Penny’s story and her discovery of magic and of course chaos! You’ll love her from the start with her quirkiness, awkwardness, and unique but funny swearing. Some of the things don’t quite jibe such as a 24 y.o. still living at home under a controlling parent, but just roll with it. The book is entertaining and you’ll likely laugh. The narrator did a good job providing unique voices and appropriate tone inflections for each character and scene.

Almost stopped listening, as the voice the narrator used for Penny was just painful. Felt like a young adult novel.

This could be fact, that I am getting old and YA sometimes leads me to boring stories. But, I still had to slough through because I just can't leave a thing undone..... might look at the next one -- but it will need to have some plot.

Any additional comments?
I could not listen past 5 chapters. Not sure how this story ever got five stars. All over the place, childish and confusing. I actually had to start over two times to understand what in the world is all about. Just awful.

silly and not my cup of tea
I thought the protagonist immediately came off as silly and thoughtless and childish. I will be honest that I did not listen to much when I realized I would not like the protagonist but I feel like I should give a review for someone similar to my way of thinking who may believe this would be a good book for him or her.
This felt very plot-driven to me and likely will be very enjoyable to many types of personalities, but it was not my cup of tea.
If you like humorous tales of strong female protagonist you may like this. I do like humorous tales of strong female protagonist but this particular protagonist also felt a bit too unserious for me. It was funny. Just from the bit that I listen to I found myself outright chuckling on several occasions so I can only imagine how funny it is as one continues. But, I just couldn't get past the protagonist's personality and annoying Mary Sue implications in the very beginning of the story.
I refuse to listen to a story that says a protagonist can have fully functional powers in the initial scene brought out by a mere thought but yet knows nothing about said fully functional powers until she got into her twenties in that scene. I call BS on that. I just can't do it.
Anyone with a powerful gift or talent that is fully functional will know they have a gift or talent by the time it's fully functional. Either it would form over time or spring up overnight. If it develops over time the person would notice the changes depending on the severity of the changes and the lapse of time it would take for the development to take place. If it developed overnight the person would see the change immediately if the change is quite different. Being able to do this sort of magic with thoughts is a quite severe change. She never noticed that before this?
If you can make magic simply by thinking then shouldn't all of her thoughts have made some form of magic when her powers turned on?
Here's the real problem, the novel may answer these questions but I refuse to listen to it long enough to get the answers. And that is my major complaint. The author didn't give me enough from the introduction of the protagonist for me to even try. it's written in tropes with a main character whose unbelievable. And that made me not want to understand the rest of the book.
If you are like me, intolerant when it comes to fictional tropes and unbelievable responses even in fantasy, do not read this book.
I get that is fantasy but it still have to be believable and has his own working logic. I just can't listen to tripe. But somebody else might like it. Good luck.

Strong beginning that wanes
Since I've been binging on Paranormal Romances lately, I'm starting to get a feel for the balance that makes this genre so fun. New worlds, new abilities and new relationships allow for a perfect backdrop for the hero and heroine to grow. This book started strong but over time it waned. There seemed to be a shallowness to the storyline and the description of the heroines "gifts" and her magical ability became repetitive.
The voice actress is very strong in other audiobooks, but in this one I became really annoyed with the voice of the mother. She had an oddly grating accent that was cringe worthy and distracted rather than added to the performance.
It's the first book in a series and I tend to get hooked and continue on. This time, I'm going to walk away...disappointed and ears ringing..

Buyer Beware
It's difficult to determine if the story might have been at least tolerable
because the narration is so awful. The change is character voices equates to yelling or screeching. This was such a waste of my time and money that I'm going to request a refund. I suggest others skip this and find another series AND narrator.

Clever, exciting, heartfelt and fun
I loved it! It was an absolute pleasure to listen to this great story with amazing narration. Every character had a strong presence and unique personality, it was perfectly paced and the dialogue was spot on.
The narration was outstanding, each voice distinct and somehow better than I had imagined. When each new main character was introduced, I was nodding, yes, that’s right! Such a great range of male and female voices too.
The main characters were excellent. I loved Penny Bristol, she’s such a brilliant mix of talent, humour and innocence. I can’t wait for the audiobook of book 2 to come out.

not as good as I'd hoped
i was somewhat frustrated by this storyline. it was a little too cliched and predictable. the main character didn't seem too upset that she'd been kept in the dark all her life. she suddenly became confident in her abilities when she shouldn't have been. characters like the mother were redeeming features

Not bad
I like where this book is going. I definitely feel like it's missing something and the whole 'I love you so I'm going to hurt you in order to protect you from my imagined failings' is just so nonsensical to me. But I do love the badass heroin who is freaking out and hiding in the cupboard.

***Meh***
I struggled to finished this book, maybe it's just me but I don't get the story line, it bores me to tears sorry but the only saving grace is the narrative by Nicole Pool she is amazing as always.
