Publisher's summary

Controversial author and scholar David Etheridge is not the kind of company an aspiring politician wants to keep. But ambitious senator Robert McCrutchen has a history with Etheridge that he's desperately trying to keep under wraps: 22 years ago, both men were investigated in the still-unsolved death of a young coed.

When Etheridge returns to Oregon, McCrutchen is his grudging host - until the senator is found shot dead. Now, Etheridge is once again suspected of murder, only this time, with the cold case reopened, he's facing a double charge.

Attorney Barbara Holloway must battle both the prosecution and the court of public opinion, which has already tried and convicted Etheridge for both murders. As the pressure mounts, Barbara must risk her own life to protect a client and preserve justice.

"Wilhelm is a masterful storyteller whose novels have just the right blend of solid plot, compelling mystery, and great courtroom drama." ( Library Journal)

Love Kate Wilhem

And narrator too! Listened to most of her books and recommend highly. She nails the legal details (as a retired prosecutor that’s high praise), but story never suffers from too much legalese.

Excellent book

Another exciting and interesting/ intriguing book by Kate Wilhelm. The narrator is superb- couldn’t be any better, as I don’t seem to tire of her abilities.

Good narrator

Good Barbara story. Pretty straight forward. As both Kate Wilhem and Anne Fields have passed it is a difficult time to criticize any parts.

Most shallow of all the books in this series

First let me say they have a new narrator who is so much better than the former. However, creepy Darrin is back and Barbara seems to think she needs to please him, even curbed her hobbies (like walking) in order to takie care of his needs. Her dad seems to think that she needs to be taken care of by a man, even if the means overpossesive Darrin. If you want a lawyer/sexy story I would read Melinda Leigh's Morgan Dane series. On Darrin's kid, Todd, the author tries to protray him as unique and thoughtful instead he comes over as a weirdo for his age. The story itself is really uneventful and the killer was easy to identify. I find it strange that just because a woman doesn't enjoy a roll in the sack, she must be a lesbian. Sigh, I guess it was written over a decade ago and the thinking was differnt. For some reason the author is trying to dumb down Barbara in this book. Also too much wine and coffee drinking again along with the glorification of Eugene and Oregon (which is ok I guess).

Very good book

Just as with book #10... I enjoyed this book very much. The story & characters were all interesting and the narrator, Carrington Mcduffie, did a great job. I look forward to listening to more books in this series. Review posted on 09/02/21

Wow. I’d give this 10 stars if I could!

I’ve listened to almost all the books in this series, and I think this was one of the bet yet! I hope there’s more to come.

Interesting and Mysterious

I personally love mysteries...this has got a well written mystery from start to end. Keep the reader wondering and trying to figure out who the killer is. Well worth sharing and I look forward to finding more from this author and the narration is also great.

I liked it

I listen while I work. I enjoy books that are easy to follow while working. These are predictable, but I don’t care. They were on the plus catalog and are free.
