Well written and nicely finished. Strong characters but somewhat stereotypical. Repetitive dialog was ignorable not bad enough to be irritating.
Narration was ok, not exceptional but didn't often distract from the story line.
Not sure I'd be willing to wade into another Mississippi bayou with Mr Iles but the book was mostly pleasurable.

Good story, somewhat predictable

I enjoyed this book on so many levels and can't wait to read the next book by this author. the storyline was exciting the characters were interesting there was a little bit of everything that you might want in a novel like this. I always feel like I can guess how things will turn out before it happens but there were actually moments where I was so surprised by what had just happened that I had to rewind the book and listen to it again! Really really awesome book!

BEST BOOK I'VE LISTENED TO! 10 STARS!!

This is a great story beautifully narrated by Tom
Stechschulte. The characters are believable and Iles paints a picture of an old southern city with secrets crime. racial distrust. and murder, involving many of the city's most important citizens. The protagonist Pen Cage,
moves back to this city Natchez, his home town, and becomes an unwilling disruptive force. with threats against his life, and family he uncovers secrets and solves a murder. Good book, hard to stop listening. Janice GW

A fascinating look at Southern mystique

Being from the South, I really like this story. Not told with the usual bad mouthing, putting the South down. Was real in the since that there are good and bad in both black and white.
