A New Tone in this Series - And It Works Well

When I listened to the first book in this series, it was wide and ambitious. This one is ambitious in its humanity, focusing on mostly one place with one group and untangling some more of the human implications of this future world Tapper has created.

Even though it's a new vibe, I still appreciated the storytelling, loved settling in with a handful of characters as they explored their dynamics and made choices. As always, Stacey Lind made that possible, blending a variety of accents and character choices to spin a clear cast. What I loved was getting to hear how focused writing made for focused emotional performances, and the opening chapter is a particularly strong one from the Tapper/Lind duo.

In the end, I do think I liked the story of the first book more, but I feel like I'm a regular and will show back up for future installations of this series with this author writer duo. I'm pumped to learn what the epilogue could mean for this world and all the characters yet to come into it!
