Publisher's Summary

A novel of terror from the Bram Stoker Award-nominated author of Pressure.

A serial kidnapper is preying upon women. He abducts them and then locks them in one of the cages dangling from the ceiling in a soundproofed basement. There, he sits quietly and just watches them, returning night after night, hoping he'll be in the room at the moment his beautiful captives finally starve to death.

Charlene and Gertie have become fast friends at the restaurant where they work. But Charlene is concerned when she hears how her co-worker spends her evenings. Gertie's cousin is one of the missing, and Gertie wanders the city streets where many of the abductions took place, using herself as bait with a high-voltage stun gun in her pocket. Charlene reluctantly offers to trail her in a car, just in case she does lure the kidnapper and things go wrong.

Unfortunately, the women find themselves the source of unwanted fame. And now, they're on the radar of a very, very dangerous man.

A Family That Slays Together

I would say that I think the first three quarters of the book played out like your typical serial killer story. The last quarter went totally off the rails, blew me away, and was so much more than I had hoped for. I love Jeff Strand’s story telling and he completely outdid himself with this one. I actually had to stop and rewind a few times to make sure I heard what I thought I had just heard. Not a happy story at all, but one I really enjoyed.

The characters were really well thought out. The logic and mentality of Ken was by far my favorite. He is a twisted individual but had a lot of good qualities as well. Can’t say I thought he was a good father, but he tried and had to deal with the same problems “normal” fathers go through. I actually laughed at his interactions with his son and while I know they were not interactions that were good, I thought he actually provided decent advice. My second favorite was Charlene. Her wit and attitude made me want to be her friend as she is immediately likeable.

The basic plot was fairly typical but had a few different aspects that kept me glued to my earbuds. I wouldn’t call them twists, but more so revelations, that as the story progresses it just ratchets up the intensity. This was really a great take on a serial killer novel and provided so many different unique plot pieces I really enjoyed it.

Aida Reluzco did a great job narrating this story. She voiced each character perfectly and kept me engaged in the story. I liked her character voices and she really did a good job with all of them. My favorite was Charlene. Hope to hear more from Reluzco.

Brilliantly different and disturbing

A twisted serial killer kidnaps women and watches them starve to death. Gertie's cousin is one of the girls that was taken and she tries to lure the killer out using herself as bait.

This was a brilliantly disturbing story. Jeff did a great job in gruesomely describing the details, while incorporating dialogue that was relevant and, unexpectedly, humorous at times. He incorporated a clever twist into the story that was very unpredictable.

Aida narrated well and was a good fit for the story. I loved the performance and it made the story even more enjoyable for me.

Different take on the serial killer novella

This riveting story changes perspectives between a serial killer who locks women in cages, his family, and two young women trying to catch him. It builds a steady sense of menace, with some good twists along with way and even some laughs. All the characters are different and believable. Reluzco's narration is top, with different voices and pace to match the action. A great short read!

Would make for a great movie!

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my voluntary honest review.

....Just wow! I honestly didn’t expect to love this book so much. It’s absolutely loaded with nonstop action, with a nice dash of gruesome detail. Strand’s descriptive writing style is great. The entire time I was listening, I kept wondering how in the world this could possibly end. I loved the ending as well. I actually felt like I’d watched a movie when it was over.

If you’re a fan of horror or true crime, there’s no way you won’t love this book!

Never disappointing

As usual Jeff never disappoints when it comes to truly writing about sick effed up individuals in truly messed up situations. Those who are used to his writings won’t be dissatisfied and if you are new to his work let this be warning you are about to go on a very disturbing ride through a very disturbed mind. Lol I however love his books and definitely recommend his books this one included. It’s a fairly quick read I finished it in one sitting but well worth it. I was given this audio in exchange for honest review for free as I always strive to do like them or not. And this one I very much liked , enjoy.

Short, but excellent listen

This was my first Jeff Strand book, and I loved it. He has all the hallmarks of what I love in a story, suspense, absurdism and mayhem. I will definitely be checking out one of his other stories.

Aida is an excellent narrator, and she brought a great performance and gave life to the characters. Look forward to hearing more of her work

Creatively Twisted

This is a truly dark story that grows ever darker as it progresses. It shows how depravity can take many forms, and how each is unique to the individual.

The narration is done well. It is a touch fast, which at times takes from the suspense of the story, but overall done quite well.

Entertaining horror story

If you go into this book expecting it to be like “Wolf Hunt” or “Ferocious”, you will be disappointed, as the style is quite different and there is no comedy in this book.

However it was well written, and the main characters were likeable, and reasonably smart. The villain was okay, although I’m not sure if he’ll be entirely memorable. There were a few deaths and a bit of gore, it was a quick read and kept me entertained.

This is not my favourite Jeff Strand though, as it was more of a straight crime/horror rather than horror-comedy, which he does so well.

The narrator was excellent.
