It Should Have Been Entitled Cheaters

I disliked the screeching, whiney, grating voice of the female narrator.
This novel should rightly be titled The Cheaters. There are at least five cheating couples but what makes this interesting is the consequences of their actions.
Clover, the first narrator of two, (the other being her husband, Spencer), begins by having sex with her neighbor, Joe, and hoping that Spencer hears them through the window she left open for exactly that purpose. It is never revealed why exactly she wanted Spencer to overhear the passionate moans of her lovemaking with the neighbor or how loud she and Joe would have been. Now that I think about it, one or both of them would have had to be shrieking at the top of their lungs to be overheard from next door.
(Spoiler alert: although this is the prologue, the action doesn’t take place until much later in the story. If you skip it, you won’t miss anything.)
Clover, age 40, works from home as a legal administrator. For the last six years Clover and Spencer have lived across the street from Tanya, Joe and their 16 year old son, Ethan.
As Clover was dragging her bin to the curb for garbage collection day, Tanya said to no one in particular but in a voice clearly meant for Clover to overhear, "This street used to be exclusive. But look at it now."
Things were on and popping after that!
Another day Tanya, who Clover dislikes intensely because Tanya was unneighborly with her chronic complaining and nitpicking, was overheard by Clover talking on the phone. Even from only listening to one side of the call, it is clear that Tanya is trying to end an affair. What a titillating piece of gossip this was! Clover was bursting with excitement to share this juicy morsel but with whom?

What is one of the greatest in taboo pantheon? Your husband having an affair with your best friend and sister, Lily.

Despite past failing attempts to have a baby, Spencer is maintaining the facade of marital contentment despite wanting out of the marriage. So when mild flirtation with his regularly visiting sister-in-law, Lily, blossoms into a reciprocal action and affair begins.

The story is littered with unfaithful spouses so you really can’t feel sorry when some people finally get their comeuppances. Others marriages remain unbelievably intact.

Overall it is an entertaining albeit implausible story.

Better than his last books

It’s still the same as most of his books, predictable, a little twist but not a gripping story.

I liked it! It felt like a nod to dating in your 40s - men like her husband!

Slow and somewhat boring.

Slow and not as interesting or entertaining as his other books. Definitely not a favorite. Ending was predictable.
