Being a lesbian doesn’t come natural to everyone. That’s what Erika Kleinman learned during her sexual awakening in 1990s Seattle, when she began dating a host of butch women who were all too willing to show her the ropes. My Life as a Dyke recounts Kleinmans’ relationships with candor and humor while making one thing clear: no matter who you’re interested in, dating can be a nightmare.

Overall the story was ok, but the thing that really stuck out to me is the fact that she's not a lesbian. She explicitly states that Jordan was the only "butch" that she dated that she really connected with and loved but Jordan was a transman the whole time whether he had transitioned or not. With pleonasm, the author is technically a bisexual heteroromantic (partner's genitals don't matter but their gender expression does). I feel confident saying this because I'm a bisexual homoromantic woman that had a very similar situation happen when I was young. My first ex is a transman now and the way the author described feeling "out of sync" with cis female partners is how I felt with him even when he still identified as female. I think the author should have done a little more self-reflection. Just because you are in gay relationships doesn't mean you're actually gay and while it didn't feel transphobic the book was certainly ignorant.

The plus side is now I have another example of someone who is very firmly romantically attracted to one gender but ambivalent or enjoys both sexes.

TL;DR: Author isn't a lesbian/dyke but the story is mildly interesting

This may have just been a few pages from the authors journal, but not worth making it into a book.

Boring

This book was open and honest about the queer community. The characters experience is informative yet ever fluid. We are constantly learning about our selves and each other’ processes. Thank you Erika and Aimee did a wonderful job at narration.
