Publisher's Summary

Los Angeles is booming. Money is pouring in. Buildings are going up. But someone is killing architects.

Detective Sam Carver journeys through sins scattered across the City of Angels, where hipsters, homeless, immigrants, producers, politicians, movie stars, and cops collide in mysterious ways. Every move Carver makes is anticipated by the killer, Dylan Cross. She has hacked his computer and knows his diaries and secrets. She sees in him a kindred and damaged spirit, a man who can understand her crimes, heal her scars, and love her. Dylan is reclaiming herself from a past of brutal injustices inflicted by a world of misogyny and power. Detective Carver is dealing with his own troubled history: an elusive and violent father.

My Detective is a story of obsession set against vengeance and prayers of forgiveness in a city that is as cruel as it is fantastical. It captures modern Los Angeles in real time, an eerie glide through the imagination, where winds gust high above the San Gabriel Mountains and neighborhoods stretch toward the ocean like the flash and tremor of a dream. The novel speaks to our sense of beauty in a new century and the demons we rouse when we dare to create a new metropolis.

Too Political for the storyline

While the overall idea for the story was intriguing, there was no need to introduce unrelated political views in every chapter! Can’t someone just write a good mystery without preaching! I think most people are burnt out from all of the politics right now and would appreciate a break!

Okay

It really pisses me off how the author thinks it’s casual to disrespect our former president and expects readers to agree with his biased views.

Leave the politics out.

I listen to books often to take me away from the hurly burly of life and I was shocked to encounter an anti-Trump diatribe. I continued but it recurred. I don't need this in a crime fiction novel. I don't want TDS following me around. I had to stop listening.
Don't buy this book if you are opposed top the polarization of politics.

Love it! Could NOT stop listening!

SO GOOD! From start to finish I was intrigued and it only got better and better. performances, especially the woman narrator are excellent. I thought I had it figured it out but the twists and turns and unfolding. Excellent. What a ride!

Not good

Removed from my library. Hard to follow and the author took a cheap shot at President Trump.

Renaissance man

So I read the second book first. It was good enough to go back to the beginning. Glad I did. This establishes many of the references that are talked about in #2, so the picture is clearer now. This too is a good story. A lone (loner) cop is hunting a serial killer of architects. Sam Carver is a Renaissance man. He plays the piano a bit and reads. He appears like someone I'd like to meet. I hope the series continues.

Great characters

I enjoyed this reading except for the political references which almost made me stop listening. I was pleasantly surprised by the ending.

good story, great narration

The story is good, not as well written as the sequel. I could do without the politics, the little rants about the authors voting preferences and gender politics don't fit an otherwise well written book. These rants seem like an afterthought to fit today's culture. Otherwise a well out together storyline, believable characters for the most part. If you enjoy this you'll really enjoy Last Dance, a far better novel.

Interesting rread

I felt the book was a strange read at first, but towards the end I felt it was a bit more meaningful. I feel i was an understandable ending.

Different, but I liked it

Different but I liked it, can't say much without spoiling the story, it could have been really dark in a few places, but because of the way it was written, those dark parts weren't so bad, I like a range of books, rom com to dark and twisted. If I have to say one thing, not so much about the plot, but the feel, deep down in the style of the writing, it had a very artistic feel, its hard to describe but you know how paint moves under an artists brush on a canvas, even when painting a beautiful picture, you still use dark colours to shape and shade, and complete the picture.
