Publisher's Summary

Director, writer, and actor Jay Chandrasekhar tells the hilarious history of his comedy group, Broken Lizard, and the making of the cult film Super Troopers, as well as the currently filming Super Troopers 2.

Jay Chandrasekhar has spent the past two decades writing, directing, and acting in film and TV. With his comedy group, Broken Lizard, he has produced and directed beloved movies such as Super Troopers, Beerfest, and Club Dread. Now, with the coming release of the long-awaited Super Troopers 2, Jay is ready to tell the ridiculous, madcap, dead-honest story of how he built his career, how he formed Broken Lizard, and, ultimately, how he made Super Troopers.

Jay grew up Indian American in the lily-white suburbs of Chicago, and he had an outsider's perspective from the beginning. Instead of taking the traditional acting path, he formed his own troop, wrote his own scripts, and made movies his own way. And he had an incredibly good time doing so, as listeners will learn in this hilarious story about making it in Hollywood and making one of the best-loved and most-watched comedies of all time. Part humorous memoir, part film study, this book will inform, entertain, and tell listeners what drinking multiple bottles of maple syrup is really like.

Broken lizard behind the scenes

It was interesting to hear jays perspective about how he got his start as well as lizards. Follows the rhythm and jokes of the movies which I enjoy so it met my expectations.

A must for anyone interested in the film industry

If you think I could be a(n) blank (insert film industry profession here) this is, not just a great book to have but, the book to have. It’s insightful and hilarious it keeps your attention and makes you laugh, and teaches you a little more about an industry millions dream of making a splash in (myself included) without being pretentious and condescending. Jay is fantastic period. He was in film and he is on audio book format. I love this book and will and have recommended it to everyone I know.

Very funny, read by author, learned a lot

This book was honestly awesome.
I started it, and pretty much finished it during the same day. Read by the author you hear him laughing as he's retelling the stories. It really adds to the book.
-Finding out the backstory, the stories and thinking behind individual parts in the movies they made was really great.
(how the meow scene, initial highway opening scene... even how the idea for Beerfest came about & some of the funny parts for that came about... all is revealed in this book)

-Plus, understanding the process that Jay went through to become a good director, and his insights into how the film industry really seems to work is just amazing
-Seems like he's had a really interesting life, and as a fan of the movies, i'm glad to be able to share in some of that.
-Also got a few really good recommendations for movies i should watch, that has had an impact on him.

-Really worthwhile book, and you won't be disappointed spending your credit on this.
I've recommended it to everyone who watched Super Troopers, but also those that haven't, for the insights into the film industry. Really a great listen

A Little Light on ST2

I picked this audio book up for something to listen to while I work out. I'd enjoyed the movies "Super Troopers" and "Beerfest" so I was familiar with Jay and the rest of the Broken Lizard crew. This is an autobiography of not only Jay Chandrasekhar (narrated by him!) but also the origin story of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe. Lots of funny stories of him growing up, of their struggle to get Broken Lizard off the ground, and the trials of promoting a movie at Sundance. Just as with Kevin Smith's autobiography, Jay spent a little too much time on one movie ("Dukes of Hazzard", Smith's was "Cop Out") in his career. I think he may have been trying to fill pages, but there are some good stories nonetheless. I wish he spent a little more time on their writing process when it comes to movies and of course talked more about the intricacies of filming a crowd-funded movie ("Super Troopers 2") than the short paragraphs that ended up at the very end of the book. Overall, a great book for anyone wanting to know more about how a group of screw-ups from college became one of stoner movie icons of the 21st century.
