“I AM RIVETED. The Lady Sherlock series is so smart and clever and witty.”–Julia Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of the Bridgerton series

Only Charlotte Holmes—aka Sherlock Holmes—could solve a puzzling murder case that implicates her friend, a Scotland Yard inspector, in this locked-room Victorian mystery from the USA Today bestselling author of A Study in Scarlet Women.

Inspector Treadles, Charlotte Holmes’s friend and collaborator, has been found locked in a room with two dead men, both of whom worked with his wife at the great manufacturing enterprise she has recently inherited.

Rumors fly. Had Inspector Treadles killed the men because they had opposed his wife’s initiatives at every turn? Had he killed in a fit of jealous rage, because he suspected Mrs. Treadles of harboring deeper feelings for one of the men? To make matters worse, he refuses to speak on his own behalf, despite the overwhelming evidence against him.

Charlotte finds herself in a case strewn with lies and secrets. But which lies are to cover up small sins, and which secrets would flay open a past better left forgotten? Not to mention, how can she concentrate on these murders, when Lord Ingram, her oldest friend and sometime lover, at last dangles before her the one thing she has always wanted?

Critic reviews

Praise for the Lady Sherlock Series

“I cannot recommend this series enough.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Ali Hazelwood

“With an increasingly beloved detective crew, this Victorian mystery offers thrills and sharp insights into human behavior.” —Kirkus Reviews (Starred)

"These books, which recast Sherlock Holmes as Charlotte Holmes, are perfect for those who adore layered stories. Unignorable questions of gender, expectation and privilege lurk beneath complex mysteries and a slowly scorching romance."—The Washington Post

"The mystery at the novel's heart is compelling...but it's once again the author's incisive and compassionate glimpses at how women survive the strictures of misogyny that place the book a cut above the rest."--The Austin Chronicle

"This spell-binding tale is the third in the Lady Sherlock Historical Mysteries and is even better (if possible) than the last. For those who have yet to experience this new "take" on the beloved Sherlock Holmes and the Victorian realm that never disappoints, this is a series you must start reading right now!"--Suspense Magazine

I'm always pleased to find well written books and, if I'm lucky, they are a series. The principal character of Charlotte Is developed carefully but with a subtle and delightful sense of humor woven in.... I highly recommend the series but suggest you be sure to read it in order because it will improve your experience.

I was a little disappointed in the last book, but this one may be the best yet. All characters are given the limelight at one point or the other; each character is developed further. Neat story and because of the circumstances in the plot, the story draws you in from the first chapter.

Best Yet!

this book and I have a love hate. I hate all the drawn out explanations but love the building romance. it's about time true feelings were discussed and addressed.

Sherry Thomas can truly spin a mystery. what I find so delightful in her stories is that I get so wrapped up in the characters and their story lines that the "who done it" part runs second to that. excited for November & the sixth installment.
