Nurse Amy Leatheran had never felt the lure of the "mysterious East", but she nonetheless accepts an assignment at Hassanieh, an ancient site deep in the Iraqi desert, to care for the wife of a celebrated archaeologist. Mrs Leidner is suffering bizarre visions and nervous terror.

"I'm afraid of being killed!" she admits to her nurse. Her terror, unfortunately, is anything but unfounded, and Nurse Leatheran is soon enough without a patient.

The world's greatest detective happens to be in the vicinity, however: having concluded an assignment in Syria, and curious about the dig at Hassanieh, Hercule Poirot arrives in time to lead a murder investigation that will tax even his remarkable powers - and in a part of the world that has seen more than its share of misadventure and foul play.

One of Agatha Christie's very clever works. Really enjoyable novel in an exotic eastern setting.

Excellent

This has been one of my favorite Agatha Christie books. The narration took some getting used to, but the story was worth it.

Amazing story, but fantastic narration

intriguing story, though lacking many of the subtle clues of other Christie classics, but the narration was absolutely painfilul. Nurse sounded like an aged spinster, rather than the thirty-something professional woman she was. All the men had gutteral, vaguely Germanic accents and rather froggy voices. The only reason I forged through was for cookies are other stories - and in the veeeery end there was o be. So, yes. Decent boom made barely palatable by horrific narration.

Ghastly Narration

A classic poirot murder mystery. absolutely lovely!
Only thing that bothered me a tiny bit is that the narater sounds like a lovely 60 year old lady and our protagonist is only 30. Got me a bit confused at times. But overal great narration.

loved it

This title seems unusually atmospheric for an Agatha Christie novel - almost like a Gothic romance.

I think the narrator added a lot to the sense of atmosphere and curiosity of this book, even if the accents aren't good. But I gave a 5/5 for performance because she otherwise picques & sustains your interest throughout!

Great narration!

A Poirot with a Germn accent with a touch of Chineese ruined this classic Christie tale.

Poor Narrator

Being the first mystery novel I have listened to instead of reading, it would have been helpful to have a pen and paper handy to keep track of characters and layouts. An enjoyable listen nonetheless.

A fine reading of this novel

I didn’t like Anna Massey’s portrayal of Poirot. She made him sound like an annoying person and not the impressive, lovable detective we know. Story was excellent. Narrator was sub-par.

Anna Massey did not do the Great Poirot justice
