Publisher's Summary

In 1814, Atlas Catesby, a brilliant adventurer and youngest son of a baron, is anxious to resume his world travels after a carriage accident left him injured in London. But his plans are derailed when, passing through a country village, he discovers a helpless woman being auctioned off to the highest bidder - by her husband. In order to save her, Atlas purchases the lady, Lilliana, on the spot to set her free. But Lilliana, desperate to be with her young sons and knowing the laws of England give a father all parental rights, refuses to be rescued - until weeks later when her husband is murdered, and Atlas is the only one who can help clear her name.

Fortunately, Atlas is a master at solving complicated puzzles and finds himself uniquely suited to the task, despite the personal peril it may put him in. But soon he learns the dead man had many secrets - and more than a few enemies willing to kill to keep them quiet.

And a new detective is born

Or at least enjoys puzzles. Truly despicable villians, a charming heroine and a Bow Street runner that reminded me of Columbo. Quite an enjoyable book and plan on getting #2.

Disappointing and Predictable

I had such hopes for this book! I really liked how it started and the premise. Unfortunately, I had it all figured out pretty quick. I'm not saying that because I think I'm brilliant; it was just that obvious, and cliche. That made all the comments about how clever he was hard to swallow, and the hours left of the book boring. For those who care, there was a surprising amount of innuendo and sex talk for the time period. I felt uncomfortable with some of the graphic passionate scenes, that all bordered on sex, but didn't complete the deed. There is a homosexual character and they have a passionate scene.

Good listen. Easy pace.

This book reminded me so much of the inspector lavender series so if you enjoy that series I think you will like this book

The sound fluctuates in volume and clarity.

The story may be a good one ,but the narration varies far too much in volume and clarity. A good part of a paragraph will be clear and then for some reason the volume will just drop and the narrator sounds like he is whispering a completely unnecessary section of the text. I couldn't be bothered trying to listen to it; I would have had to change volume louder and quieter constantly. By the way, the sample 4:00 mins of the narration that is available for evaluation does not include the up down nature of the sound. But, once one starts listening to the actual book it is constant.

Just OK for me

I didn't mind the story or the mystery, but I didn't take up with the characters. Atlas was OK, but I didn't like Lilliana at all, and the connection (or lack of) did not appeal to me. I don't want to discourage anyone else from trying the book, but I don't think I will try the rest of the series. It was OK - maybe a book without Lilliana would work better for me.

good narration, and story - it is lacking atmospher

While listening to this book, i have a hard time settling into the story. the atmosphere is not laid out so it is kind of like listening to actors with no set changes.

Written with a view to becoming a TV series?

One of those books you can put down and pick back up when there’s nothing better available. The story is almost serialized and goes on and on. You could skip a couple of chapters and not miss much.

Fair to Middling.

Science a bit inaccurate for the time. I think it could have been improved with a careful rewriting, but reasonably entertaining.

Loved the story with all its twists and turns. Engaging characters and it kept me guessing until the end. Good narration.
