BOOK 3 IN THE BESTSELLING CANON CLEMENT MYSTERY SERIES

'A delightful piece of detective work' Mail on Sunday
'A very moreish read' Daily Telegraph

Canon Daniel Clement has suffered a secret humiliation and to recover takes respite at the monastery where he was a novice. But the monastery doesn't allow the break he needs, for tensions are building there too. There is a death at the monastery, and Daniel thinks it might be murder.

Meanwhile back at Champton, Daniel is the subject of village gossip, his mother Audrey is up to something again, there's trouble at the dress shop, trouble up at the big house, and the puppies are running riot.©2024 Richard Coles

Reseñas de la Crítica

Coles's feline wit and infectious enthusiasm for ecclesiastical trivia make for a very moreish read. (Jake Kerridge)
Written in Coles's customary wry style which owes much to the work of Alan Bennett. (Geoffrey Wansell)
Richard writes beautifully... a delightful piece of detective work set in a religious order. The atmosphere is so intense, you can almost smell the incense on the page. (Ryan Tubridy)
A village that could rival Agatha Christie's St Mary Mead and the TV murder hotspot of Midsomer for its ever growing body count

The main character is not perfect, and I like him all the more because of his personality, and sensitivity towards others. He sticks to his instincts when he is discouraged by others, and becomes a stronger person because of them. He has a vulnerability that most people would want to hide and protect, but he uses it as an internal shield to protect his inner being. His being a Priest has a whole separate set of internal problems - ummunst them are the internal church community. I do not understand the internal workings of the Catholic Church, but it has rank like the business world, with upper, middle, and lower management. There were quite a few internal stories going on throughout the storyline, and it felt like a typical busy Monday all week long for the Cannon. I guess this would be normal as he had his hand into many things being an Administrator. I have heard it called putting out fires or controlling problems to put it plainly.
But I would differently recommend this book and the author as the like his style of writing.
Waiting for #4.

I watched the first show and decided to read the series.

Light on mystery and awfully slow at times however the domestic scenes are wonderful. Still worth a listen. Also I liked the awakening of Daniel’s romantic life - I hope it continues.

Slow but lovely

I liked the story and the familiar characters. And of course the love between the two main characters.

The life in a monastery

I loved the first two books and was really looking forward to the third in the series, but everything about this book really disappointed me: the murder was dull, the solving of it equally dull. The wonderful side characters such as Audrey reduced to being paper thin. Storylines that didn’t go anywhere and felt like padding, designed to achieve word count.

I feel there was just too much emphasis on Daniel’s love life for a murder mystery. I do hope the series continues and the fourth book is a return to form.

Very disappointing

I guessed the murderer early on, and the gist of the backstory, but I still enjoyed every minute of this story

Funny and gentle, insightful, cozy with a side of theology
