Winter of 1935 finds Oxford archaeologist, Sonny Nichols, under arrest for the theft of a priceless Roman relic from a dig in Cornwall. Thr backstories of each character

it needs a narrator to give the interactions between the characters more context, to build suspense.

Good plot

Virtual voice is probably fine for children’s but not for adult books. Mispronunciation and lack of voice inflections is distracting. Too bad I like this writer but don’t want to listen to AI.

Bad narration

This would have been better with a real narrator. The sing-songy voice was very annoying.

Poor narration

This was a very good story; a good plot with interesting characters. But the virtual voice narration really made it less enjoyable. There was no personality, or depth to the reading; the characters could hardly be distinguished from one another and there was lots of missed punctuation. Please do over with a human narrator

I prefer human voices

Virtual voice is OK, but sometimes the mispronunciation or the wrong inflection can throw everything off.

Virtual Voice ruins audiobooks!

The plot and the characters were too good to ruin the book with Virtual Voice. Either engage one or more human readers or don’t make an audiobook! I would read another book by the author, but would not listen to another book read by Virtual Voice. Do not buy this one.

Virtual voice is terrible

The story could have been good but the virtual voice just made boring. Don't bother.

GG Vandegrift does great research too bad the narration was so horrible. The inflections were mostly in wrong place and hard to follow who was speaking

Virtual voice is awful- inflection and pronunciation detracts from story. I won’t listen to another with virtual voice.

robo voice failure

the book has some shortcomings. for instance a Roman "tile" that's worth thousands of dollars? are they talking about a mosaic or single tile? a single tile is just a piece of split stone. it's hard to believe that a man will be put in jail with such a high bail for a single stone. then the investigator starts getting threatening telegrams right away when she's hardly started investigating. so the story is a little overblown. that is forgivable if the characters are interesting. they are not. a live reader might make something of the dry material, making it sound lively. the robo voice leaves nothing to get interested in.

you won't see many reviews because we have to listen for hours before we allowed to review. most people won't find it worth the trouble.
