Publisher's Summary
A year after the devastating murder of his wife, attorney David Sloane has returned to Seattle after three months in Mexico. At a black-tie dinner where he’s been persuaded to give the keynote address, Sloane reconnects with Barclay Reid, opposing counsel in his most prominent case. Barclay is suffering from her own personal tragedy - the death of her teenage daughter from a drug overdose. In the aftermath, Barclay has begun an intense crusade against the Russian drug traffickers she holds responsible for her daughter’s death, pursuing them with a righteousness that matches Sloane’s own zeal for justice. Despite their adversarial past, Sloane is drawn to Barclay and for the first time since his wife died, he finds himself beginning to have romantic feelings again. But when Barclay’s crusade stalls and a Russian drug dealer turns up dead, she stands accused of murder, and Sloane is her chosen defender. Amid the swirling media frenzy, in his first criminal case, Sloane finds himself once again in harm’s way, while mounting evidence suggests that Barclay is a woman with many secrets - and may not be quite as innocent as she seems.
With his signature fast-paced, page-turning action and exhilarating plot twists, Robert Dugoni once again proves why he’s so often been named the heir to Grisham’s literary throne.

Great Addition To The Series
A drug dealer is set free by a judge because he finds the evidence inadmissible. Which in turn takes on a whole new meaning. He ends up dead after his release. A woman is charged with his murder and the dark secrets start to surface. Reid, the accused, hires Sloane to defend her of the charges. She charms her way into his life and they start seeing more of each other, regularly. But things are not all as they seem. Things start to fall into place as the investigation and the trial begins. Certain things come to light. Things Reid has said and the way she seems unphased by the events that aren't in her favor, Sloane starts to think something is wrong. If you like a good deception story line and deceit along with it, this is the book for you. If you have listened to any of this author's books you will not be disappointed..

Outstanding Legal Thriller
This is an outstanding legal thriller that I read based on a recommendation from author Diana Gabaldon. The novel starts off very slowly, introducing a plethora of characters.
Initially, the story proved to be very confusing and I almost gave up, but forged ahead based on the recommendation. Gradually, I realized my confusion stemmed from the fact that this book is in the middle of the series, each story building on the prior. The remedy proved to be rereading each early encounter until I became familiar with the various characters.
The story is very complex and with many twists and turns. I guarantee you won't guess the murderer until the very end, even though all the clues were there.
I liked this book so much that I am now going back and reading the rest of the series.

A 5 star legal thriller in the David Sloane series
I like Robert Dugoni's Tracy Crosswhite detective thriller series more than his David Sloane legal thriller series. Nevertheless, this David Sloane thriller is outstanding. The twist near the end gets this novel extra credit. There is lots of action and suspense both inside and outside the courtroom. Highly recommended.

A legal puzzle.
Sadly, I put all the pieces together in the beginning (gut feeling). This isn't a norm, so you may not have this happen whatsoever. That said, I really enjoyed this book about a lawyer defending another lawyer against an allegation of murdering a drug dealer. It was very well pulled together with the writing fluid and consistent. The end left me feeling that another book must be following...or there should be. Narration was excellent. A good read!

Performance needs work
The story line was good but easily predictable. I did still enjoy I’d however. I’ve listened to a number of Dugoni books and what struck me this time was this is a different narrator and immediately in Chapter 1 it’s apparent he had difficulty w a woman’s voice. I did not turn it off, but it was that annoying. But I knew fr other weak performances that you just keep listening and soon it’s the new norm. Such was the case w this one. The Dugoni book prior to this one was MUCH better. This felt like it was written as a contract deadline. BUT it won’t stop me fr reading the next one.
