Publisher's Summary

Lee Barrett has agreed to attend a storage auction with Aunt Ibby - even though she suspects the forgotten rooms will yield more junk than treasure. Her skepticism vanishes once the two win a bid on an overlooked locker and uncover a trove of beautiful curiosities, including a stunning wooden carousel horse with gentle eyes and fading paint. But just before Lee leaves the fairground relic at a local repair shop, the sight of a silver samovar awakens her psychic abilities and conjures visions of murder. Lee prays the intrusive ESP episode was just a glimpse into the past - until her policeman boyfriend reports a dead man outside the repair shop. Apparently, the unknown victim had been hot on Lee's trail since the auction. And with the horse found dismantled, it looks like he was up to no good. What's the story behind the antique equine, and could a strange bubblegum-chewing woman with fiery hair have something to do with the crime? Guided by her gift and O'Ryan, her wise tabby cat, Lee's set on catching the murderer...before she's sent on the darkest ride of her life.

A bit disappointed

I didn't enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed the previous books in this series. Not because of the writing, but, because the Czar Nicholas story has been done too many times and seemed a bit far fetched. I just couldn't get into it. I also was a bit frustrated with Lee. She needs to accept that she has a gift and make peace with it, or figure out a way to ignore it. Either way, she needs to stop complaining. I hope there is more character development in the next story. I still have hope in this series. C.S.E. Cooney did a great job with the narration. I had no problem with her performance.

Narration isn't working for me.

I'm not able to focus on the story because the narration is so flat. Tried speeding it up and that didn't help either. Disappointing.

Terrible narration

I'm not sure what has happened but it seems like the narrator has completely lost it. She cannot seem to get the flow, tone or voices right anymore. It made this unbearable to listen to which is really disappointing as I like these stories. I'm not sure why she no longer can narrat in a nice tone. But the cadence of her voice is out, the whole thing is a mess.

Worst narrator ever

Would you try another book from Carol J. Perry and/or C.S.E. Cooney?

Maybe as long as she doesn’t use the same narrator. I could not make it thru the last 2 books because she is one of the worst readers I have ever heard

What could Carol J. Perry have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Use a different narrator

How could the performance have been better?

She needs to read normal. Her reading does not flow and it is such a bad performance that I just couldn’t listen to it long enough to finish the series. I will never listen to another book with this reader.

Love this series!

Great series... The narrator is very good. I'm able to easily distinguish between the voices so I know who is who. It also helps that the author didn't introduce a ton of people at once. I still wish she would get back to working at the tv station but maybe that will come over time. I really like River North's character (would love for that to be a whole new series). It is a nice light mystery, which is what I like. Not a lot of steamy romance (which I also like). And my only criticism is the way Pete (the boyfriend) talks to the main character. His "good girl" comments really bug me. And he only seems okay with her solving things if he is around to take credit. So, not a fan of the boyfriend Pete. That won't stop me from listening though... still a great story and good narration.

The story couldn't hold my attention.

A rather thin plot with lots of other things going on that had nothing to do with the main plot. The other books were much better. If this had been my first purchase I wouldn't have bought any other books by this author.

Good story, awful narration

The narration is terrible: flat, stilted, and choppy. It's irritating because some of the characters are actually fine (the boyfriend sounds normal for example) but the main character and her tarot-reading friend are just ... awful. The story itself is good, though, so it might be worth it for you. I listened to the first 3 a year ago and had forgotten how much I despise this narrator so I got this one for the long COVID haul, but I'm sorry to be locked in my head with this flat, boring voice.

Narration Done Right

This is exactly how a narration should be done if you are reading a book without vocalizing multiple affectation. Some narrators try to do vocalizing in different voices and blow the whole narration causing the listeners joy of a good even great story to be an unhappy experience or even as far as making a great story to be so bad an experience they don't even finish it. If you're narrating a story from certain areas of the US or Foreign Country and can't get the accent right then don't try just read it straight. Thank you for showing a straight read can be very effective.
