Publisher's Summary

In Jilly Cooper's latest, raciest novel, Rupert Campbell-Black takes centre stage in the cutthroat world of flat racing.

Rupert is consumed by one obsession: that Love Rat, his adored grey horse, be proclaimed champion stallion. He longs to trounce Roberto's Revenge, the stallion owned by his detested rival, Cosmo Rannaldini, which means abandoning his racing empire at Penscombe and his darling wife, Taggie, and chasing winners in the richest races worldwide, from Dubai to Los Angeles to Melbourne.

Luckily the fort at home is held by Rupert's assistant, Gav, a genius with horses, fancied by every stable lass but damaged by alcoholism and a vile wife. When Gala, a grieving but ravishing Zimbabwean widow moves to Penscombe as carer for Rupert's wayward father, it is not just Gav who is attracted to her: a returning Rupert finds himself dangerously tempted.

Gala adores horses, and when she switches to working in the yard, her carer's job is taken by a devastatingly handsome South African man who claims to be gay but seems far keener on caring for the angelic Taggie. And as increasingly sinister acts of sabotage strike at Penscombe, the game of musical loose boxes gathers apace....

Entertaining

Contemporary with good character development. Tugs at my heart strings. More mystery and people interaction than prior book.

Wonderfully sentimental

I originally discovered jilly Cooper when I was a teenager. Polo is still one of my favourite books as it was one of those books I could not put down. Over recent years I think Jilly has slightly gone of the boil, and her attempt to be current is at times cringe worthy. However, mount was a really fun read. What I particularly liked is her references to previous novels, bringing back past characters. Her personification of all of the animals is wonderful. Mount was like the icing on the cake of all of her previous novels. All I can ask is, Jilly, would it at all be possible to write a book about what happened to Red Alderton? I like the idea of him, similarly to Rupert, finding a lovely woman that catches his heart. If you are a Cooper fan then this won't disappoint.

Amazing. Jilly brings Rutshire together once more

The only bad thing about this book is that I got thought it so quickly it's already finished! I'm off to re-read the series from the start, only wish Rivals, Polo and The Man Who Made Husbands jealous were also available by audio. They make my commute to work every day a real pleasure!! Thank you Jilly x

Beautifully read ...

A right rollicking story in true Jilly Cooper style... lots of characters to keep up with and the action is fast moving . A little too many corny quips , all rather too obvious, but lovely to catch up with all the old characters... I love how she humanises the horses and dogs...
The narrator is particularly clever to keep up with all the different accents, she keeps it all alive.

Classic Cooper

No one in the world talks like this, and I'm pretty sure no one acts like this. All of Coopers women are either doormats or bitches (or both), while the men are allowed a little more personality. That said, it's classic Jilly Cooper, I don't read/listen to it expecting reality, depth or nuance, and I inhaled this audiobook at every opportunity, because it's just so entertaining!

Ruined by awful narration

I love the Rutshire chronicles having read most of the books in my teens. However, Mount was ruined by poor narration. Also I thought Helen was American in the earlier books, she now has an English accent?

Oh Dear Jilly

I had not read/listened to any of Jilly Coopers books for a number of years and looked forward to revisiting Rupert CB et al, but I was so disappointed with Mount. The narrator was ok on some characters but others requiring accents were dreadful. The more... shall we say 'risqué' scenes, were reduced to sounding like a third rate farce, some of the narrative was beyond ridiculous bordering on cringe worthy.

one of the worst

Tedious. Boring. Narrative horrific.
I really used to love Jilly Cooper but I will not be in a hurry to buy another if she brings one out.
Narrator was awful. shouldn't have attempted the accents. They were incredibly painful. I don't recommend this. if I could get my.money back I would!!

Rupert !!

I am an avid jolly cooper - Rupert Campbell-Black fan and this is the first Audio book I have purchased it let the experience down for me, I found the narrators interpretations of some characters bordering on childlike

Not as good as Rivals and Riders

Sadly Mount didn’t compare with Jilly’s much earlier Rutshire books- it was far too long and just lacked the magic. It was good to hear about characters from previous books but killing off Billy was a mistake. To me the worst thing was Rupert being unfaithful to Taggie. The narration was good but I preferred the narrator of Rivals . Good- but not great.

Spot on!

I've read all of Jilly Cooper's books about Rupert Campbell-Black and friends but this is my first audiobook version. It was spot on - really brought the characters to life, just as I had imagined their voices. As with all the books, it was great fun and a really good read. Looking forward to the next one!

Marvellous Mount

An avid follower of Jilly Cooper's Rutshire chronicles for over 20 years - Mount doesn't disappoint. Bringing to life familiar characters and introducing new individuals to the Cotswold countryside. I listened non stop all weekend - it felt like a reunion of old friends and scandalous family members. I laughed and cried and clapped my hands over my mouth in equal measure. Please don't let this be the last instalment Jilly...

Great end to a story

I never thought that it would be possible to have a great sequel but I found this was fantastic. It had all the trappings like riders but had suspense and longing and love. Awesome finish keeping you guessing till the end. Loved it
