In a world fueled by greed and corruption, where airships rule the skies and coal mines have been turned into prisons, Scarlett Moon has one goal: survive. Being tough and looking out for herself is the only way to stay alive, but when her best friend, Rory, is arrested and returned to the mines, all of Scarlett's carefully built walls threaten to crumble.

After being rescued by an airship full of pirates, led by the sexy and irresistible Asher Kimura, Scarlett finds herself surrounded by cons and fugitives, and thrust into the middle of a coal-smuggling business. When they take her to Columbus, the one place she never wanted to set foot in again, she wants nothing more than to get away. And her discomfort only grows as she becomes increasingly drawn to Asher.

But everything changes when she discovers there may be a way to rescue Rory. Enlisting the pirates' help, Scarlett sets out on a mission to save her friend, praying that her overwhelming attraction to Asher doesn't mean the end to her freedom - in more ways than one.

This book had more of a romantic feel than I had expected but, it's still a great dystopian tale. I love that Scarlett is a sassy, sexy, bad ass that can take out an enemy with the flick of her star. I can't wait to hear more of her story. Overall, its an exciting book, excellent narration. I received a review copy at my request and voluntarily reviewed.

Not what I was expecting...but I enjoyed it

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book but I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it alot.
It's hard to review without giving too much away but my main points are as follows.
It's a new dystopian world that is unlike any others I have read to date which is refreshing, (some out there are starting to sound a little repetative).
The background information that you need to know what happened to make the world the way is is, are is dripped out in a way that keeps you reading, waiting for that next piece of information and wanting more.
The same goes for the story of the protagonist - Scarlet's past, there is just enough coming to you at the right time to keep you reading, it all falls into place quite nicely.
I felt frustrated by her alot, but there are constant reminders that she is still just a young adult (older teen) and that her upbringing has been hard and VERY unconventional so you remember to go easy on her.
You are also constantly reminded that her world is a very different one, she has had to grow up fast and become very hard in order to survive.
I loved the twists and turns of the new people she meets and the hot head way she tackles things.
I felt there was enough story and action to make it a really interesting read and I am looking forward to reading the next instalment in this series as it left me wanting to know what happens next.
I would recommend this for older teens, young adults and even grown adults like me who enjoy this genre.

I really enjoyed this

I enjoyed this story. It was set in a grungy, steampunky world where kids work in coal mines if they have no parents and pirates steal coal. The storyline introduces Moonchild and her friends who get into a bind and meet up with pirates.Heidi Drennan was a fine narrator. I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.

Miss Moonchild!! I loved this one!! Post apoc with a twist!! Scarlet and her friends are homeless and on the run after escaping the mines in this crazy controlled no tech world.., They get rescued by a group of Pirates and at first are very wary of this group...but as they get to know each other and Scarlet meets Asher, its clear that this is where she and her friends belong!! SUCH A GREAT STORY!!! Well written, and narrated...Great characters and a very intriguing world!! I recommend!!! I am on to book 2 now!!!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! KATE L MARY IS AMAZING!!!

Good narration. She does a great job with all the character’s voices, and she gives a quality performance and quality recording.

Entertaining and interesting story! Fun ideas and premise. There’s a little bit of that steampunk type style; airships and such, I actually would’ve like more of those elements, but still an interesting sort of apocalyptic world. Not a fan of most, if not all of Kate L. Mary’s books dealing with disgusting, sexually deviant men, but it is satisfying that those idiots mostly get what they deserve. Loved Scarlett ability to kick butt; not into her wearing a skimpy skirt all the time when she knows she’ll be fighting, and she is a bit of a brat, but I liked her overall. She’s ruled by her emotions, but I enjoy her tough attitude. She’s had a tough life; parents died, orphan, living on the streets, and dealing with gross men trying to abuse her, so she finds it tough to trust. When Scarlett and her crew get into some trouble, sort of pirate, Asher, and his crew save Scarlett and her crew. Unfortunately, one of Scarlett’s friends gets taken; the friend is in major danger, so Scarlett is forced to trust on the help from Asher and his crew to save her. Lots of corruption, greed, and disgusting people causing problems. The romance was too high school for me; not into the whole annoying long-term ex-girlfriend being a part of the story. I do like the chemistry between Scarlett and Asher though; there’s just a lot of push back from Scarlett because she thinks she doesn’t want a true, loving relationship. It gets annoying, but I’d be wary too with how close Asher and Paget were. Asher and Paget’s past and current relationship is a lot to deal with. Plus, Asher has that whole I’m charming and flirt with all the ladies type of personality, which isn’t an ideal for a future boyfriend. Overall, I found the story interesting and fun!

Entertaining, fun elements!
