Publisher's Summary

Minority Leader is a necessary audiobook guide to harnessing the strengths of being an outsider by Stacey Abrams, one of the most prominent black female politicians in the US.

Networking, persistence, and hard work are the crucial ingredients to advancing a career, but for people like Stacey Abrams, and many in the New American Majority, it takes more than that to get ahead. Stacey, who grew up in a working poor family in Gulfport, Mississippi, rose from humble roots to Yale Law School and, through a career in C-suite businesses, to become the first woman to lead either party in the Georgia General Assembly and the first African American to lead in the House of Representatives. In Minority Leader, Stacey combines aspects of memoir with real-world advice for women and people of color, offering hard-won insights for navigating worlds that, until now, were largely the territory of white men alone.

Stacey encourages listeners both to leverage otherness to their advantage and to recognize their own underlying feelings of unworthiness and legitimate fears. Sure, networking helps, but so do well-chosen mentors, thoughtful self-advocacy, and, above all, pinpointing one's genuine passions. Stacey applies her lessons to the recent graduate taking her big idea to the start-up level, the Latino city councilman eyeing the mayor's office, and the young assistant navigating her way to a higher position. There is precious little such wisdom out there. Stacey is determined to change that.

A powerful and unmissable audiobook for every conscientious American.

Excellent Book!

Excellent Book to Read!

This is a well-written and articulate book. By reading it the reader will get a keen insight to her leadership and what develop her leadership style from her upbringing, past experience and her current position. I am from Atlanta, graduate of Morehouse College (the author is a graduate from our sister college Spelman College) met Ms. Abram several time on many occasions (she is very humble), she has great resume academically, and was a bold leader as a GA legislator. Nevertheless, this book make me more and more impressed with her. She is smart, great thinker, excellent strategist, has a great plan for the future and she is very secure with who she is. I am very impressed. Great book to read about leadership!

How to lead when you’re different from others

Most books on leadership assume that everyone starts off on a level playing field, but this one does not. It’s an honest, thoughtful guide to creating effective change written by and for the minority: those who don’t have power. I rarely ever leave audiobook reviews but this one was truly different and I was surprised that I found it so relatable.

First, acknowledge that you are in the minority and that you will face challenges as a result of that - there’s no escaping it. Whether it’s because you will not be given the same voice and influence as your white male colleagues or the same financial resources as those born with money or the self-assurance of those who didn’t have to overcome the racism, sexism, or any of the -isms that you have had to face. Yet, the obstacles can be overcome. The experiences and challenges described by Ms. Abrams cover acknowledging your fears and self doubt, discovering and embracing your ambitions, and translating them into goals with specific advice on how to take steps in achieving them- all in the context of what you can specifically and creatively do in *your* situation. Yes, you are different, but you can use that to make it work for you. The book advises on situations like pushing beyond your boundaries, dealing with naysayers, managing your time while playing to your strengths, and ‘mentoring’ and ’networking’ - not fancy shmancy Ivy League and boys’ clubs events that have no use for you, but rather finding help and resources in the places you would least expect and from the people who you think would support you, and of course, doing the same for them in return.

In addition to her race, gender, and modest beginnings, Ms Abrams does not have the bombastic personality that some people expect from leaders and politicians (especially nowadays). She has a thoughtful, calmer yet strong personality. In addition to being a lawyer and now candidate for governor of Georgia, she writes fiction novels and is also an entrepreneur who’s started several successful companies. She’s single and perfectly happy with it. If you are someone who has or have had many different career aspirations, she will show you that yes, it can be done. She does not shy away from discovering her ambitions and she asks that you do the same.

I found this book really valuable and I hope you will too. I definitely recommend it for anyone who wishes to be a more effective leader, whether in your own life or in your community’s.
