Nightmares are real in the cold dark waters of the deep.

National security agent Cade Rearden is used to secrets. Assigned to protect the ultra-dark organization known as The Cove Project, he grapples with his role of defending a country still in crisis after a deadly super AI has devastated much of the US.

But when part of his team mysteriously disappears beneath the idyllic waters of the Caribbean, Cade finds himself thrust into a web of lies and mystery, at the heart of which lies an eons-old secret that somebody will kill to protect.

Grappling with his inner demons and struggling to locate his friends, Cade stumbles upon a government cover-up...and terrifying creatures hidden miles beneath the surface of the ocean. This is the Midnight Zone. Where deadly super-organisms rise from the crushing abyss.

In a desperate race against time, Cade must unravel the truth with the help of Cove’s brilliant computer Doris and discover what happened to his friends. But his search soon puts him in the cross-hairs of a ruthless cabal - one that will stop at nothing to stay hidden and preserve what they have created.

This is one of my favorites

I really hope this keeps going for at least 4-5 books. I have told people about Dorris and got them listening to the series. I wouldn’t be surprised if 1/2 of this is true.

Good Continuation of the Story Line

I was given this free review copy audio-book at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This review is for the audio copy of Midnight Zone-A Cade Rearden Thriller, Book 2 by JK Franks and narrated by Lee Strayer. Book 2 doesn’t disappoint. The characters were consistent; the story was exciting and full of thrills and adventures. This was a good continuation of the story line and I highly recommend it. Lee does a great job of narrating and doing the different voices. He made the story come alive in my mind. I am anxiously awaiting more Cade Rearden adventures!

Modern Science Meets Cthulhu

At the start of the Midnight Zone, the world is a more fragile place thanks to the AI war detailed in State of Chaos. America’s financial institutions have been damaged, confidence in government has been reduced, and the other nations of the world—enemies and allies alike—are moving to take advantage of America’s weakness. Unfortunately, those are only the obvious problems facing the United States as our heroes from the previous book become aware that the Janus AI from State of Chaos was only the opening gambit from a secret group of megalomaniacs determined to save the planet by reducing its population by a few billion people. And that’s not even the scary part!

These megalomaniacs have discovered that aliens—truly horrific monsters that inspired the Cthulhu mythos of H.P. Lovecraft—have visited our planet and they are trying to tap into the knowledge those creatures left behind to bring about their doomsday scenario. For most authors, that would be more than enough to drive his thriller, but J. K. Franks always takes his books to another level. He mixes modern science with Cthulhu and sends his teams to the remote corners of the world—the bottom of the Caribbean and the heart of Antarctica—to piece together the secret history of the planet’s first couple of billion years as his heroes try to understand how the monsters of the ancient past are returning to reek havoc today. Lots of authors have played with the Cthulhu mythos, but none that I am aware of have done anything like what Franks has pulled together in the Midnight Zone.

If you want a thriller that really pushes the boundaries of the imagination, get yourself a copy of the Midnight Zone.

Well constructed story line

Extremely plausible and well researched story. I really enjoyed the amount of research. The JK Franks puts into every book. Additionally, I enjoy stretching the current status of technology. Can’t wait for the next books. thanks.

Caribbean Nessie!

Strange things are occurring in the world’s oceans. The USS Liberty, essentially a spy ship similar to the USS Pueblo, cruised quietly across the eastern Mediterranean. Its purpose is to gather intelligence from trouble spots around the globe. The USS Liberty would not survive another hour. Kisa and Sarah, certified divers and trained oceanographers, performed their normal monitoring dives off the Caribbean Islands. Suddenly a bright, pulsing blue-white light appeared, tentacles seeming to come at them, a creature of some sort. Sarah disappeared. Kisa went back to the boat but Sarah was not there. Kisa dove again to look for Sarah but she was nowhere to be found. The Midnight Zone; the region of the ocean that sunlight never reached. An abundance of strange creatures and a diversity of life populated this region. The Portugal submarine U2809 sonar identified something large, traveling fast through the water towards them. Nothing like that should be in this area. U2809 was destroyed. Captain Cade Rearden, call sign Nomad, was still dealing with night terrors and had his trio of personalities in his crowded head; Ace the analyst, Brutus the barbarian, and Gus the level-headed. His Talon team and the Cove were now assigned their most important mission since eliminating Janus. They are to backtrack the suspicious occurrences in the Caribbean and Mediterranean to their source. Meanwhile, the enemy has been active with quantum computers of their own, as they too have the first part of the alien message. Their first endeavor, the large underwater ship called Kalypso. Several Cove teams are dispatched throughout the globe to investigate sightings and odd incidents. Unexplained, unusual findings that appear unconnected but most likely will merge at some point. An interesting and complex tale to be sure. The surrounding story and historical background of what the teams encountered were amazing, to say the least, fantastic at their best. The follow up to State of Chaos.

Midnight Zone is most certainly focused on Cade Rearden as the main character but is also a follow up to State of Chaos which should definitely be read first as this one picks up not long after those events and relies heavily on prior knowledge.
As with State of Chaos, this is a fast paced thrill ride with very little down time to let you catch up. Wouldn’t want it any other way. Cade can’t catch up so why should you. Very engaging and well told story. This one will not easily be put down.

Narration was top notch with various voices making it easy to distinguish characters. Although, he really does not do female voices well. It did not detract from the story for me.
