Publisher's Summary

The Selection meets Reign in this dazzling trilogy of interwoven novels about three girls on a quest for freedom and true love from number-one internationally best-selling author Richelle Mead.

In the second installment of the number-one New York Times best-selling Glittering Court series, Richelle Mead goes beyond the glitz and glamour, delving into the dark, political underbelly of their world through the eyes of one girl who dares to fight for her freedom.

A refugee of war, Mira was cast out of her home country and thrust into another, where the conditions were inhospitable at best. In a life-altering twist of fate, she is given the chance to escape once more, and she takes it, joining the Glittering Court.

For a select group of girls, the Glittering Court offers a shot at a life they've only ever dreamed of, one of luxury, glamour, and leisure. But for Mira it means further persecution, not only from her fellow Glittering Court jewels but from her suitors as well - men she would potentially be expected to give her life to.

By day she goes through the motions, learning the etiquette and customs that will help to earn her anonymity, even making a couple true friends in the process, the forthright ladies' maid Adelaide and the ambitious laundress Tamsin. But by night Mira hatches a different plan entirely - one that, if exposed, could get her hanged in the highest court of Adoria.

Midnight Jewel is the extraordinary story of a girl with few options who courageously forges a new path, finding love, passion, lifelong friendships, and maybe even a way to freedom.

Not Richelle Mead's best...

I have never been more disappointed in a Richelle Mead book. I am typically a huge Mead fan but this book was a drag..I kept waiting for it to get better but then it was over. I'm not sure I'm into the whole same story different perspective thing b/c for me this book was just not that great. It might have been the narrator but honestly she wasn't bad so I don't think so. if your looking for a great Mead book try her Dark Swan series.

An Okay Sequel

I didn’t enjoy this story as much as I did the first one. There were times it was hard to really get into it I just had to struggle and learned just to finish it. I did like the character of Grant, and I didn’t mind the protagonist in the story but her life got boring at times. I’m not sure why I felt this way because it was very action-packed. Maybe it was just how Kyla read the story?

I will say that it it was nice to see the point of view from one of the other members of the glittering court. In the first book you find that she’s sneaking out at night but do not know the reason for it. You discover it in this book.

Her different accents are part of her character

I would recommend to anyone! Please note the different accents she uses is apart of her character. The narrator was portraying her correctly.

Awkward Writing, Awkward Narration

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Die hard Richelle Mead fans.

What do you think your next listen will be?

A romance novel.

How could the performance have been better?

If the narrator could keep her accents consistent and better performed. The protagonist has an accent in the book, and the narrator made her sound like five different nationalities within five minutes. It was, frankly, horrible.

What character would you cut from Midnight Jewel?

Tom the Pirate. What a weird side-plot, and her dealings with Tom made me dislike Mira, the protagonist, quite a bit.

Any additional comments?

The book was a disappointment, and the narrator did it absolutely no favors. I regret buying this audiobook.

It's ok. Not worth my credit.

I read the first book and loved it. This one was easy to tune out and get distracted by other things while listening. I think if the 3 stories were combined into one single book, it'd be better than dealing with the three and trying to place what happened when, when they're all occurring concurrently.

Disappointed

This book in the series felt very drawn out with no ability to invest in the characters. The reader does a terrible accent for the main character and the accent changes without meaning to. I had a lot of hopes for this book, as the character seemed a lot stronger and more interesting in the first book. This book made her sound like a love sick 14 year old. Not a heroic war victim.

Even better that the first. And the narrator was also incredible! I can’t wait for the next one in the series to be released!

Delightful

After reading the first book in this series, I kinda had an idea if the kinds if twists this trilogy could throw at me, but even I didn't expect all of them here. The story is amazing, also as expected from Ms. Mead, and her characterization really surprised me. The daring backstory of Mira was what made my sympathic to her trials and I loved her strength. The reading and accents were well done, and I enjoyed hearing the reader speaking. Looking forward to Emerald Sea later this month and hearing the full story of the remaining girl.

Amazing book

I love how this was told from Mira’s point of view. The narrator was excellent and the story was great!
